Hi...

Zack Arias had a webcast at Creativelive.com...Studio Lighting with Zack Arias Friday, June 11 - Sunday, June 13...

Anyone got any details of this ?

Believe it was free...but now costs $150...

Anyway just in the off chance anyone has any insight...

STEVIER

Yes I saw it. Not worth $150

Interesting but there are better

EDIT -
Just watched a little of it again and I forgot how good it actually was :)

I saw it and thought it was great. It taught me more about lighting than any other DVD I've ever seen. In a down to earth and straightforward manner too, with real life shooting going on and plenty of humour. I'd certainly recommend it if you want to learn studio lighting.

His One Light DVD was great.

Loved the Onelight...

I like his attitude...Think its because he lost it all...then came back...makes for more humble & appreciative...

and not taking yourself too serious helps as well...

you serious - it was pretty basic stuff, not particulary great photos and you can find all that info on the web. zack is a good businessman

Yeah...of course I am...or I wouldnt have said that...

Im still learning...and want to do it from the ground up...

Anyway...just my opinion...I like the guy...and his style of teaching...but each to their own...!

Hey Stevier

I watched it live and thought it was good but I have seen the Onelight DVD a few times and although he covered a lot more time in the creativelive session I wouldn't think it's worth an extra 149$ for having both, just imho

I watched it when I was first learning - Not watched it for ages buit I really liked it (from what I remember).

Just had a look again though at the CL day and I take back what I said.... excellent stuff.

I have both the One Light DVD and the CreativeLive download, and though there is naturally some duplication, both offer a great insight into lighting for those who are new to it. For what it's worth, I would heartily recommend either or both.

You can find any info about anything on the web, but having it taught in a learning style that people can understand and digest is a very different thing. As for the average photos, Zack is doing very well for himself with these "Average pictures"

Not everyone wants or likes massive technical details. A DVD called one light is not going to be aimed at people who can use 5 flashes on a shoot. It has a definite and very large marketplace. Good business it may be, but without good content to back it up he would be nothing. There are a million and one books and DVDs on the subject, Zack just has a good teaching style.

To the OP. The course was his creative live one. Amazing amount to be picked up from that course.

Not sure if you are aware of the creative live process. Basically it is webcast for free, so everyone can learn from the artist. Those who got a lot from it, or those who want to watch it again then pay for the ability to download the course to re watch at your leisure. I bought Zacks, and I also bough Jeremy Cowarts.

I think as far as business models go it is an amazing one. Everyone has the chance for world class tuition, and if you want to own it you can buy the course which helps to fund more courses. Usually there is a discount if you buy it on the weekend of the event.

I think the Zack Arias one is about 18 hours of tuition all in, which is great value for £100ish

search YouTube for lighting tutorials then practice yourself no need for spending stupid amounts of money on DVDs

Edit : Discussion of piracy is not allowed. Thanks.

I agree with you, I have seen his one light DVD and am glad I didn't buy it. $285 is a complete rip off.

is that because is dear or is not worth the money??

It's a good dvd,if it was £50 or £60 I would say it was excellent value, but at what would now be over £200 by the time you imported it's far too expensive for what the information it provides.

The best value lighting resource (other than the free stuff on t'internet) is currently the Lightenupandshoot V-book, which is just over a tenner...

Zack's DVD was reduced to $100 just before Xmas, which is when I bought it. He put the price down as a holiday special and gave all the money to charity from the sales.

I do agree DVD'd tend to be overpriced, that is unfortunately the nature of the game. If they brought the price down to £50 a pop they would sell much more, and make more profit overall. The problem is someone needs to take a lead on it, and no one seems willing to do so.

The creative live thing is possibly the best way to learn if the subject has a vague interest to you.

I keep looking at that V Book and might invest in it. At a tenner I can always give it to my father in law if it is something that I don't like.

Great recomendation Flash, thanks. Ive just been through free videos, linked from their site, not much in the way of tutition but very entertaining to watch. going to buy the vbook.

just bought it and download it :) look very interesting.

Another plus for the V Book - very good value for £10.

I really liked the V Book...

I like the light hearted approach...to most things...which youd know if you had to work with me...

Nothing worse than the very proscriptive...you must...you must...you must...

Think that why I like Zack Arias as well...

Its all abou the whole...go do it and learn from your mistake...and get better...and learn...and get better......they just give you the building blocks and plans...you gotta do the work...!!!

In the famous words of Stan Laurel:

"You can lead take a horse to water...but a pencil must be led."

...I'VE GOTTA TAKE MORE PHOTOS...

I know the quote doesnt really apply...but Ive always wanted to post it somewhere...

EDIT:

It should be:

"You can lead a horse to water...but a pencil must be led."

Cheers Haggis...!

No worries mate. I do these things too often myself! :)

I'm a big fan of Zack and I would recommend both the OneLight dvd and his Creative Live download. Yes you can probably find the information elsewhere online for free but it all takes time, and the amount I learned from the CL broadcast and actually attending the OneLight workshop was well worth the cost. There are thing's I learned from him that I use every time I do a photoshoot.
