Yv's 52 - Week 9 - Play

I love both shots Yv, I think the first is more pleasing to the eye with the looser curls of light. The second conveys more of an impression of speed.

Both great - well done!

Phil

No2 for me Yvonne.

Fantastic twist on the theme with the new gear? Really creative that lady  Nice homage to the racing past - but can also see why it has similarities to the grinder.

:)

Thanks guys - I think you have picked up on my slight reservations better than I did - whilst #1 is more 'artistic' and closer to what I wanted, #2 just gives a greater impression on 'speed' - well you live and learn :D

Yes Matt, with the new D700, which is fab

Hi Yvonne - I'm ashamed to say I'm still making first visits to far too many 52 threads, but I have at last caught up with yours, and loving it. :) May favourite so far is Chopped - before I read your explanation I thought you'd crobarred the two tomatoe haves into the two lemon halves. :bonk: :)

Week 5: This is something I've never tried and it looks really difficult! Well done on two really effective shots. I agree #2 gives more of an impression of Speed, so gets my vote - but it's a tight run thing and I also like #1.

Jean

Great concept Yv! Can't quite decide which I prefer.............but I looks like you were having speedy fun:thumbs:

Cheers, Rob

Yv they are both very good and very creative. #1 gets my vote. I like the colours in them too. Great take on the theme:thumbs:

Your first one works best for me. Very creative too.

These look like great fun, and it's something I've been meaning to try . . . I'd better hurry up too before we lose the dark nights.

I love the bit of back story to it. I would never have had you down as a racing girl - I always thought that wildlife was your thing.

In terms of choosing between them, I can only repeat what's been said above. No.1 in terms of the better image. It's just got a bit more oomph to it and IMO the background has worked better.
For the theme though, No.2 seems to be more in keeping with Speed.

I'm glad that you tried something different rather than going for the car shot. There are only so many ways that you can interpret speed so it's nice to come across something unique.

That looks brilliant, like proper cool! :D

Kudos on the modern impressionism approach (knew swallowing that dictionary wasnt completely foolhardy!:geek:)

As commented on Flickr... these are great! I can't wait to see you light painting landscapes and flowers Bosanko stylee!

Thankyou again all. They are HUGE fun to do and not so difficult to do this kind of thing. An actual picture is much harder, but we did a few last night, and whilst MB has nothing to worry about Lee, it was quite satisfying getting some identifiable 'pictures'. Not done anything with them yet but will post a few when I get chance later. ;)

Both look fun to do and I bet there was some flying around the garden going on to capture them. Second is definitely an angle grinder, the first is my favourite just needed a little less 'smoke' effect at the top. I wouldn't know where to start with these but looking forward to seeing what you come up with in future. Maybe a whole 52 of them? ;)

excellent.. like both but am drawn more towards the 1st shot.. love the colours you've used, like the flowing lines.. did the neighbours spot you running around with torches? ;)

Very well done on both of them Yv... I prefer the second... it looks "faster" to me...

Ok, 'present' presented several challenges and I think that can be seen when looking at other peoples interpretations. Have to admit time limitations did not help me on this and I finally took the shot I had been thinking of on Sunday, same day as the next one was announced. Hey ho, its my 52, there will be weeks when I run late or have to play catch up but hopefully not too many.

This is a shot of a work of art I was incredibly flattered to receive as a gift from a long standing member of this forum, so spent some time trying decide on the best way to photograph this present to me. In the end I opted for very simple lighting, by way of a torch, and a background that would produce more than a simple shadow. The background is basically a red piece of fabric, overlayed with a brown transluscent sarong that has tiny spanges sewn into it, hence the starry effect, I might even add an edit later with a few starbursts! The actual piece is carved from wood, and on initial sight appears to be a feather, but has a character within it. After playing with angles on the torch I noticed that at certain angles, the shadow started to look shorter and dumpier and more like some kind of forest gnome [well in my imagination anyway], which I thought quite appropriate from a Spirit of the Feather carved from wood.

It was hung from colour blend thread so getting it to stay still and not twist was hard work, impossible in fact so you may be able to detect the tiniest amount of motion blur, but in many ways this shot is also about the lighting and the shadow too so please don't hit me too hard ;)

Anyway, my eternal thanks to Charlie for this beautiful piece of work, which is now hung back in the display cabinet [looking left again, which it refused to do when free hung - we both agreed it was slightly better that way for some reason we couldn't fathom] and here is the initial edit, but I might take on a little inspiration from Sarahs stuff and do some fancier editing when time allows.

That's just beautiful Yv . . . and funnily enough I very nearly did something VERY SIMILAR

That Sarong makes a beautiful background, almost like a starry night, and the torchlight is extremely effective. I love the way that its distorted the face in the shadow.
The motion blur really doesn't bother me at all, because as you said, the image is more about the shadow and the texture of the background background than the feather. The only thing I'd like to see changed is a bit of darkening in the bottom left hand corner to complete the framing.

And I can't comment on this shot without complimenting Charlie yet again on his fantastic scroll sawing skills

p.s. I'm really flattered that I got a mention in your description - it's amazing to think that something I've done could have inspired somebody else, even if it's only in a small way. So thank you.

Damn its so hard to keep up with these 52's :)

Loving you speed attempt, i should get out there and do some myself

Not sure that I'm too fussed on 'Present' Yv... probably down to the fact that it's a personal gift so doesn't mean a lot to me. Looking forward to what you pull outa the bag for 'people'. :)

Thankyou for the comments. I have definately been slacking in my own efforts at commenting, so that tonights job.

People - as soon as tis was announced, I knew I wouldn't be geting this shot until Saturday. Its been a another busy week but with a TP meet planned, I was pretty certain I could wait until the weekend.
I spent a few hours with Dave, Sean and Beth in London in the afternoon. The guys wanted to se the Palace [Buck, not Westminister] so we walked up the Mall with al the tourists.
Lots and lots of people around, lots of people asking other people to take their pictures in front of the gates and the Victoria Memorial and that was what finally grabbed my attention. Got a few of these but this is the one I keep coming back to. In many ways its nothing special, some would say the focus is on the wrong subject, but I like it as a summarisation of the whole tourist atmosphere outside the Palace yesterday. ;)

Works perfectly for me Yv. I think the focus is in exactly the right place almost as if you're begging the photographer to get her focus right. Nothing wrong with this at all. Very nicely done in my book

Present - Beautiful, simple as that.

People - nicely composed, great use of available light and as has already been stated above, the focus is bang on. I'd be stoked with this.

great people shot.. nicely focused and just the right DOF (looks like her shot will be wonky ;))

present is lovely.. great lighting and an interesting object

A really great shot for 'people' and your 'present' shot is simply beautiful

I like it & I like the way the focus is on the 'photographer' rather than the subject - makes the shot more interesting.

Phil

Loving "Present" like the shadow of the dove in the background

People, just simple and effective.

Nice simple shot Yv works really well, the focus on the lady and her camera is perfect for that scene.

I really like your week 7. It's a picture of someone taking a picture... almost reminds me of those images that are a picture, of a picture, of a picture, of a picture... You see where i'm going with this? :D

I really like your people photo, as I've just said on another thread I've just discovered while on holiday in France that I really like photo's of people taking photo's of people. The focus to me is perfect as it's the photographer I'm interested in and the subject is incidental.

I agree with the above comments. It's a great shot and shows you're a photographer for focusing on the person taking the picture. :)

Hi there Yvonne,

Browsing your thread from where I left off three weeks ago, Speed was the first shot, and the circular saw (#2) is an amazing painting job. Wonderful stuff.

I think I mentioned on another thread that I've enjoyed all the "people being people" shots this week, and this one is no exception. Lovely and clear, and nice and epxressive.

Good stuff.

Ian.

Good people shot - I like :)

I remember once seeing a photo (I think was in the people and portraits section on here) where someone had togged a wedding, and had done a picture almost the same as that, but really tight in on the camera LCD - that's the only way I could think of improving your one... Really close on the LCD so the picture in that is the only part of the image in focus, with the rest all beautifully bokeh'd out!

:)

I like the people shot - lots of people there but only one of them in focus - I think it works really well and a great idea for this theme :)
