I'm thinking of picking up some Yungnuo flashes but I'm confused with all the models and compatibility.
I'm looking for one with a receiver built in that I can control with my 622n tx, that also has ttl and hss. Anyone point me in the right direction? It needs to be Nikon compatible.

Thanks

It'd be the YN685 but IIRC there's no Nikon version yet.

So it'll be a YN586 and a 622n receiver to sit it on.

I think you might be out of luck finding a single one with all those features, the YN560III is the only one i am aware of with built in receiver, but it is a manual only flash, and the YN565EX is the TTL equivalent, but doesn't have reciever, unless someone more knowledgeable comes along

I have one of each and for the price they are a cracking couple of flash guns

EDIT: Beaten to it by someone more knowledgeable

Any idea if/when a Nikon version of the YN685 might be available?
Try Flash Havoc for rumours, but be aware that Yongnuo have a reputation of launching stuff they can't produce enough of and a reliable supply could be months after release.

If you need it in the next year, don't hold your breath.

YN565EX is compatible with both Canon and Nikon. I use mine with the built in flash commander on my D7000

I am going to jump into this conversation if I may Having the same issue... But don't really understand flash.

I had a flash on my Pentax system but didn't really use it a lot but was nice to have for the odd shots. So now I'm with Nikon I want something cheap (as I won't use it loads), hence looking at Youngnuo.

What's the difference between manual and TTL? Is manual difficult to use? I'm liking the look and price of a 560iii and the inbuilt wireless so I only need one transmitter but will I find no TTL an issue with my lack of knowledge? Would this make it difficult to just quickly pick up and shoot? Is there a different model Youngnuo I should be looking at?

Don't worry, i was the same when i first came into the world of flash photography

I'm no expert, but this is my understanding of the two

Basically a manual flash is just that, fully manual, so you have to tell the flash what setting to use, and this relays no information to the camera, so you will need to adjust your settings in-camera to suit, otherwise everything will be overexposed by the flash

TTL (or Through The Lens) is fully automatic, so the camera tells the flash what power to use and adjusts the exposure accordingly, so essentially works just like your on board flash but with more power and much more adjustment

Maunual flashes are idea for OCF (Off Camera Flash), so to add light to a subject from above/side/behind etc, hence why the 560III has built in wireless, TTL flashes are mainly for use on camera

So the 2 paired together make for a great combination, on camera TTL flash with the addition of an OCF manual unit

Hope that helps

Ahhh thanks

So.. For the easiest set up I'd be looking for a flash I could use on the camera easily and quickly, no messing with things, so TTL. But then I could get some triggers to use it off camera (and this would be manual then?).

Which Youngnuo would I be looking to get get then? Not the 560 as it's manual only if I'm correct?

HHS is also something I would be interested in, is this feature still retained when using triggers?

Thanks again for the info!

Yes, you can use a TTL flash in manual mode (and use it off camera with some triggers), but you can't use a manual flash in TTL mode, so ideally you should be looking at a TTL flash

Not to sure on HHS to be fair, hopefully someone more knowledgeable than myself will come along

But i would highly recommend the YN565EX as a cheapish entry level TTL flash (HHS withstanding)

Also have a look at Shanny better build quality for similar/cheaper price.

As a first flash, I'd recommend something TTL compatible and preferably HSS (FP sync for Nikon) that means the YN568, although there are Shanny and Neewer variants too.

Yes was going to add does it have to be Youngnuo, there are a few other third party manual/TTL flashs out there, again have a browse on flash havoc for some reviews

I've got a YN685 that I use with a YN622TX, I am using it on a canon though but I would say it's definitely worth finding out about the possibility of a nikon version as it's sounds like it'd be just what your after, I've certainly been impressed by the combination.

I'm by no means an expert of off camera flash but recently bought the YN568 flash to use with my D750 the reason I bought it was I wanted to do a little more of camera flash work and have a Nikon SB800 which I use as a commander unit to be honest I'm impressed with the YN568 it is a very good flash for the money. I found the build quality better than I expected it has a good range functions and easy controls you can use it in TTLor manual when you get more confident and adventurous I don't think you would regret it if you bought it ....... Just my 2p

I was sceptical of youngnuo to start with after buying 4 600rx flashes I am a huge fan they are gr8!!!!!!!!!! and a fraction of the price of canon equivalents

I can reinforce how I also think the YN600 EX RT s are brilliant , You can not go wrong . I am not sure about other peoples view , but I have a Canon 600 EX RT too , as I won't put the YN600s on the camera .... that's just me , But for slaves how can you go wrong , just brilliant .

I also use the Yongnuo controller on the camera ....BRILLIANT
