Short version is, you need 4,000hrs of watch time (240,000 minutes) in the last 365 days, and 1,000 subscribers! Previously all you needed was 10,000 views before you could get monetized.

This will force a lot of small YouTubers away.

Although I'm well off with subscribers, at just 132, my watch time for the last 365 days sits around 80,000 minutes, so about a third of the way there. I've even tried to double the number of videos I put out each week since the start of 2018.

Personally, I think it's unfair. The 10,000 view rule was hard enough - but at least gave a challenge - now it's crackers.

I just use it to look for things I am interested in. Don't have a clue what this is about, perhaps the OP can explain a bit more.

Currently, you get paid per view (roughly $1 per 1,000 views). However, YouTube are now saying you won't get paid unless you have 1,000 people subscribed to your channel AND you have at least 4,000hrs of watch time in the last 365 days.

Like yourself, there are a lot of people who just browse YouTube, and don't necessarily subscribe to a channel (I do this in some cases). A lot of my videos are Chesterfield based and get a lot of views, but people don't subscribe to my channel due to various reasons.

I understand the whole concept of this, it looks like they want to pay out less to small revenue people to attract the advertisors to the more lucrative channels?

right... like munch i found your first post made no sense at all... you never mentioned getting paid.... now the mist clears :)

Perhaps per view is a poor metric and means those with longer videos are sort of discriminated against if the view is a fixed percentage of the whole video or all of it? This way it's partly down to how many actual minutes viewers are actually watching.

There's been a few discussions lately about making money from youtube, looks like the cash cow has now gone for the part time contributor and they are trying to get it back to its initial intended purpose of people generating content to share, not just to make money.

does sound rather like tough s*** batman ,no wonder you were asking people on here to view your videos right through .bit of advice from someone that grafted all his working life ,GET A PROPER JOB MATEY.

Lets hope so, besides they will never make a fortune out of me, I use Youtoob mostly for listening to music and finding a solution to a problem.
And I hate the "Un boxing video's" with a vengeance, that get mixed in with proper information video's. Plus I've never subscribed to a "Channel" in my life ..
Being a little over 21 *cough* Is the latter an age thing I wonder ?

,GET A PROPER JOB MATEY.
Sorry Jeff but that's not the way it works these days ... or at least appears not to be ;)

I really don't understand what you're complaining about. You're sounding a bit like those people who are complaining that Tesco Clubcard gives them less free stuff than they used to get.

No one is forcing you to upload videos to YouTube. You are under no contractual obligation. You haven't paid YouTube anything. So what exactly is your beef? If you don't like the amount of money that YouTube are offering you, then don't do it. Or upload your videos somewhere else. It's a free world.

Seems to be:D

Many videos now created to up the number on their channel, many created overly long to get over the 10 minute rule, or just many, many using the same footage (dash cam warriors).
Some early adopters have made a lot of money and made a career from it and if you get really sucessful you can move onto presenting. But it does seem to be a heavy dilution these days as everyone tries to jump on the bandwagon.

It is getting very easy and cheap for people to make good quality videos these days, and getting so big and saturated with content that you can understand why they don't want to be paying every man and his dog.

It used to be that the majority of photography related stuff on there was good quality and I could watch most of it with interest. The opposite feels true now, feels like I have to sift a lot more content when searching as a lot of it is somebody having a go at a V-log without who is clearly not comfortable or not giving good info out.

Just my opinion.

I work 60hr+ weeks, have done since leaving school. Now, I still work 60+ hrs a week and also fit in time making YouTube videos for enjoyment.

If you are putting videos on youtube for enjoyment, why do you expect to be paid for it?

I don't expect to, (hell, I've only got about £45 in 18+ months), but I think the point is, YouTube is (or soon to be WAS) getting money from Advertisers on all videos that had adverts enabled, so it is only right that they give the creators of that content a cut.

TBH I've got no feelings about there being payment one way or another, but hopefully this move may cut down on the amount of crap we (I) have to sift through to find the info I want..

True, and since I heard the announcement, I have read/watched a fair bit and do see some of the benefits.

1 of two things will happen regarding all the "crap", it'll either stop/slow down as YouTube hope, or it'll explode lol.... Hopefully it'll be the first option.

Well I'm guessing that business model wasn't working at the levels it was set at, or the advertisers were not happy with their returns on investment with the way they were, so they needed to change the levels.
The ball is in your court wether you continue to submit videos at the new rates, I doubt youtube care either way with the number of views you get, sorry to be so blunt, but they are running a business and quite a successful one at that :)

I have three channels if all lumped together would still qualify.
I do get the odd video takes off and makes a few $
Not anymore though as none of them individually will come anywhere near the new minimum.

Kinda sucks for those starting out, but at least it’s an incentive to work hard at it.
So many people upload one video and expect to become the next pewdipie these days.

Think I’ll just squeeze in the threshold still.
