"You're paying cash for a D3s body and you want a discount, sir?"

I tend to suspect that one reason used car dealers discount for cash is that they can then 'forget' to tell HMRC about it at tax return time - not likely that jacobs or jessops would go that route./QUOTE]

Ermm, no. If only it were that easy. Cars are on the books and listed as stock. Just like a camera. The taxman would soon suss that out. ;)
A used car salesman doesn't care if you pay by cash, cheque or card. But to be honest, he want's commission on finance.

I don't care what anyone says, somebody is making a fortune out of us, how many millions do tesco make a year

The farmers say they don't make money but they seem to have plenty of the latest equipment.

They need it to run their business , I need a new van but if I'm not making it they won't lend me the money to buy it

A new Mondeo for 15k and one for 25k, where's the extra 10k, leather seats and er

A D3s has pretty much all the same components as a D300s so where does 4x the price come from, not assembly because that's the same, so it must be parts but how can the parts be 4x the price they can't even say low volume because I'd say D3s sales would be pretty high worldwide, probably even higher than some of the consumer models

My view is they charge what they think the Market will stand and because most competing items are in the same ballpark when we get a minimal discount we think we've done well

But isn't that the case with most things?

Actually some of the difference will be assembly-related as the D300s is mass produced in Thailand, whereas the D3s is handbuilt in Japan....

Does hand built actually mean that though, I used to work in the shoe industry, the £100 shoes were made on the same machines by the same people as the £300 shoes but they didn't have the hand made in Britain sock in them

I'm guessing but I'd think the assembly process will be very similar for a d3 and a d300 but on higher wages, I'd guess there's at least 100% markup on all of the bodies

That's a lot of stuff for that price!
I think it's the accessories that they have much more room to play with for discounts to entice you to buy. Most people buying very high end gear already have these items so I guess the sales staff are out of options to entice other than a price reduction which they seem unlikely to do.
If they would chuck in a Singh-Ray filter, Think Tank bag and maybe a new Gitzo tripod it might tempt me! :D

I can appreciate it's made by hand in Japan, surely it's a similar process in the other factories, I can't imagine robots building a D300

"According to Nikon this policy is designed to allow customers to make purchasing decisions based on service provided and not have to worry about hunting for a better price."
If that was the case it really would make it a hell of a lot easier for the buyer PROVIDED the price didn't go up loads which I'm sure it would. You only have to look at camerapricebuster to see the range of prices for a D3s. You then have to work out which are good companies to buy from. If it was just this a case of here is what a D3s will costs in the UK now decide where you want to buy it it would make life easier. It might even force shops to give better customer service if they know their competitors were the same price. ;)
