do you have one??

How much do you pay?? Or do you pay at all??

yep i haz one..

£60 per year, 500 gig of bandwidth per month, 100 email accounts, 10Gb disk space..

I'll never use that much, but once i get the new galleries up and running, the bandwidth will be getting used..

I pay £35 a year for hosting in the states, all the design & development is done by myself.

I do

and I also have a very clever web designer husband.

VERRRRRY useful, and something I am VERRRY grateful for.

A good website is so important! Never fails to amaze me how little people will or are prepared to invest in it. Realise that not everybody CAN afford it - I know we would struggle to if it wasn't what he already did.

Max

Mines £6 per domain name. The rest is free as I developed them myself and a friend hosts them for me.

I use one.com

They have 24hr live help, and if you go for the basic package, you can get a years free hosting and a domain name for £9.00 (for the first year)

I've currently got 4 sites with one.com and I haven't had a single problem. Big thumbs up to them from me.

I have the same, the basic package is
3000mb storage
Unlimited transfer
Unlimited e-mail accounts
Virus- and spam filter
Photo Gallery New!
Web Editor
Blog - 3 clicks
FTP-login - Statistics
PHP5 - MySQL
Daily backup

FREE - Google Adwords coupon
FREE - Live Help 24/7

I've 2 of these with never a problem, what more could you want. Well they do one with 25000 MB for 3.60 a month.

I'm with Vidahost, can't remember all the stats...but I've never maxed it :p Costs about £30 a year for the starter package. Top notch service....signed a friend up the other day, but we typed in the wrong domain name to purchase so we opened a ticket, and it'd been changed to the right address within 90 seconds!

I can do a totally unlimited package for £25/year. Interested. Please PM me.

Not that I doubt your credibility etc. I would just like to point out to other users out there, that when arranging hosting on private terms (with a stranger), it is worth being sure they are a registered business, that pays taxes on its activities, that is subject to the legal penalties for terminating services prematurely (just look it up on Companies House to check). This is important, because if the company runs into trouble (trying to power sell server space - stack high/sell cheap), you would actually be pretty close to being first in line for the administrators to return you as much of your payment as possible.

My last host was a guy on a forum, who was great in setting up, provided an excellent service for 6 months and then disappeared into thin air, a week after taking a payment for the next 18 months (i had originally paid for 6 and he 'offered a deal') - everything stopped and I was screwed.

I'm sure Chilliz wouldn't consider offering you a service without this, so at £25/year that sounds pretty decent. But it is a warning to make sure you check out your provider. The inconvenience on my part is that I wasn't good at backing things up off line - so I lost pretty much everything and it took a long time to rebuild.

My webspace is about £11 a month, I'm sure I could get it cheaper though so I really should shop around when it next comes up for renewal!

cheapers not always best, i had a good reliable host for a couple of years, then went elsewhere..................... ouch lesson learned, more down time in 1 month than my previous host had in 2 years, email problems, back up problems etc

what is a domain and what does hosting mean?

A domain is the 'url' or address of the website. For instance, this website has the domain 'talkphotography.co.uk'

Hosting is the basis of websites. Websites are made out of software which need to be installed onto servers (Big computers which you can upload things to and from the internets) so people can access it when they type in the 'domain' into the address bar at the top of your browser. the uploading of the software onto the server is where the hosting comes into play. For instance, talkphotography would be 'hosted' on a server, so everyone can view it. Depending on what one needs in a website, as in bandwidth (The amount of information sent and recieved in a month) and disc space (the amount of space on a hard drive that the software takes up), then one can choose who they host the website with the packages that are offered.

I think i explained it....

I use HostGator for all my hosting needs, I have a number of different sites with them.

The plan I have for my personal web site costs £78 a year and for that I get unlimited space, bandwidth, email etc.

I build and maintain all of my websites myself.

Commercial answer

Your website is a major mouthpiece for your business, and is totally worth investing in. If you have the skill, design your own. If you dont have the skill then you have 2 choices - use a template, or get somone to design something that reflects your business and creativity

A template is a cheap way of getting a reasonable website... but it will look like everyone elses. You can pay for a hosted template - where you basically "fill in the bits and add photo's" or you can purchase a template, and use a HTML editor to "fill in the gaps". Templates repersent your business too, but possibly not allways in a positive light. You need to remember that especially in a creative dicipline - having a website or marketing campagin that looks boxed - like everyone elses - leaves the customer wondeing if you are just like everyone else

Your second option is to employ a designer, and work with them, to produce something that actually does repersent your business

Lots of options, lots of prices - really you firstly need to decide - Is your business worth the investment? Or would the investment make your business worth it? Secondly you need to decide on a budget. Templates range from free to £80 per month, If you design the site yourself, you will only be paying for hosting. A commercially designed site will cost you anything form £800 upwards, depending on specification

Many will argue you can have a commercially designed site for less, but at the end of the day, you pay for what you get - it all comes down to hours worked on the site. The more work the designer does, the more the site does for you and your business. You have to weigh up your investment in a website against traditional methods of advertising. 1000 leaflets, printed ad delivered will cost you approx £400. A reasonable yellow pages ad will cost you £1600 (ours costs that), signwriting on the car or van approx £300. A glossy mailshot, may cost over £1.20 per letter

I use PCSmartHosting for mine, £35 a year for 40gb bandwidth, 2gb storage, unlimited email accounts

Service is great

I haz many.

£66 a year + vat. + name registration. 10GB storage and 500GB monthly doings.

I use 1and1, not the cheapest but very good service. I design my own sites, not very hard once you get into it and there is plenty of free software on the net that can help. When designing your own I find that planning it out on paper before you jump in head first makes for a much better website with an easy to follow structure.

Mine also costs me about 35 quid per year (with JustHost.com).

I don't know how I managed to set it all up really, as I'm no computer wizz, the templates are not very flexible and the online help is non-existent :(! Anyway, the hard bit's done now ;).

Although my website is only intended for my friends and family to view, I've found that it adds to the pressure to get out there and find new images to capture, which can only be good for my development as a photographer :).

The government should sponsor young people for web space, if you ask me - it'd certainly encourage (some of) them to use their time a little more productively, IMO :naughty:.

i pay £8 quarterly

3gb of space
60gb bandwidth
.co.uk domain
bunch of other perks as well

i think its a pretty good deal
got some special offer with the hosting company

Pro hosting is with 34sp.com and I rate them. Excellent uptime and service.

My site is based on a ProPhoto2 wordpress theme and I designed the look myself. Since moving from a static, traditional site to a blog-based one with galleries etc I have had nothing but positive responses. Brides in particular are very enthused by seeing the person and life behind the photographer.
