This is a hard choice as each has its own use. For a walkabout lens i suppose it has to be the

Nikon AFS 24-70 f2.8

And for bit more reach the Nikon AFS 70-200 f2.8

For distance the Nikon AFS 80-400 f 4.5-5.6

All are excellent for purpose but I am still getting used to them as they are recent purchases

All depends on purpose....as of right now my favorite is my newly acquired canon 600 f4 for wildlife, all time favorite portrait lens canon 85 f1.2 and for landscapes hasselblad 50mm

In order:-

1. Nikkor 70-200mm f2.8 VRII
2. Nikkor 18-35mm f3.5-4.5G
3. Tamron 150-600mm VC

100 f2.8 macro
16-35 f4

How to define top? My most used lens is my 18-250mm, but it's my worst in terms of IQ, and if it was stolen I'd probably replace it with the later Tamron 16-300mm. What about top IQ? Some of my top IQ lenses too I wouldn't replace with the same model if they were stolen. So I decided that my top three lenses should be those which I'd replace with exactly the same model because there's nothing else like them. There are more in the same category, but those three are probably the least likely to be replaced in the future by a later superior version.

Minolta 80-200mm f2.8 High Speed APO (possibly the best zoom Minolta ever made)
Sony 135mm STF f2.8 [T 4.5] (the Bokeh Queen, a Minolta design)
Sony 500mm AF f8 reflex (the only AF reflex ever made, a Minolta design now discontinued by Sony)

Top 3?

As others have said, it all depends on what I am shooting.

#1 - Minolta 85 f/1.4 G(RS). This is the easy one, it's a superb lens, and when I get the shot right, the images are special.

For 2 & 3 it's a case of what do I use most, so

#2 - Sigma 24-70 f/2.8 IF HSM. My standard walkabout and general landscape lens, I woudl prefer to have the Zeiss 24-48 f/2.8, but the Sigma is still pretty good, and was within my budget!
#3 - Tamron 70-200 f/2.8 Di USD - for when I want something a little longer than the Sigma. Again, if I had the cash I'd get the Sony 70-200 f/2.8, but like the Sigma, the Tamron is not far off the Sony, but half the price.

Other contenders woudl be my Zeiss 16-35 f/2.8, Sony 70-300G and Tamron 150-600 which I am all very happy with, and if I needed to replace any would get the same lens again, but the versatility of having 24-200 f/2.8 in the Sigma and Tamron means they are 2 lenses I would always want in my bag.

Well, 24-70, 100 macro, 100-400 and 1.4 converter although that might be cheating. If I had no shoulder probs, my 500 would be on the list.

just really interested on what other members consider their best 3

Right, I understood that very well!

My problem is that three is not enough as
I gave it a good thinking and after some
moments I just couldn't settle for three.

You got one that I wouldn't do without!

My big problem is that I have been prevented from driving by an eye specialist at a local hospital. I can see and read a car number plate well beyond the driving licence requirements, but he says my peripheral vision is not so he banned me. If I had not surrendered my driving licence I could be fined up to £1000.
Because of this my love of photography has been heavily restricted and have to rely on my wife mainly to get me to places. Hence I have to consider what to keep and what to sell, it is no use keeping every lens and tripod plus heads. I have already sold 2 lenses and in the process of selling two Manfrotto tripod heads. the Manfrotto 055XPROB will be the last accessory I shall be selling I expect.

Take heart! My old eyes are well past the point at which I could renew my driving licence, and my wife doesn't drive. I rely on foot, bicycle, and buses to get me to photogenic places. I've got more lenses than I could possibly carry, but I'm quite happy to carry a lot. I've just returned from a wander round the local Botanic Garden with a 30mm macro, a 16-50mm f2.8, 135mm f2.8, 80-200mm f2.8, and a 500mm f8. Because the light was bright I took a monopod instead of a tripod.

in fairness though, without the first two, i'd be buggered using the third one...

Nah! You'd be OK with just one of the Mk 1s! ;)

As for which 3 lenses, it depends on which system!
For the Nikons,
12-24 Sigma
24-120 f/4 Nikkor
70-300 VR Nikkor.
For the Fujis,
10-24
18-135
100-400 (with the 1.4 x telecon).

Covers all my needs (and then some!) and 99% of my wants as well.

Now read the thread and see why the question was asked. (Didn't look at other people's choices lest they influence mine.)
I would get a second opinion, Bazza, although now you're in the DVLA medical section's sights, you're probably screwed. When they were bu99ering me around, I was also reliant on my wife for transport, although I also did a fair bit of local walking. To keep weight down while I was recovering, I bought a bridge camera to cover most bases. At some sacrifice in terms of ultimate IQ but it was great for rekindling my love of taking photos which had faded as I got more ill.
FWIW, you might be entitled to free bus travel, having surrendered your DL for medical reasons. I would have been able to had the DVLA not lied to me about the length of my time off driving (they told me 6 months which ended up being almost 18 and 12 was the local length to get a bus pass.)

My most favourite lens has been a 70-200. I've owned 4 of these, I stupidly bought and sold a 70-200 VR2 only to miss it so much that I bought another (with a f4 version in between), I'm not letting this one go this time. If we can have 3 different versions of the same lens then the 70-200 f2.8 VR1, 70-200 f2.8 VR2 and 70-200 f4 VR would be my favourites three.

Canon 135mm f2 - sigma art 35mm 1.4 and fuji 60mm macro

Tough choice. Perhaps not the best but maybe the ones I've enjoyed the most:

Sony Zeiss 55 1.8
Tamron 150-600
Sigma art 35 1.8

On my Nikon DSLR it would be 24mm f2.8 D, Tokina 11-16 f2.8 and Tokina 100mm f2.8 macro.

The lenses I use most are the 50mm Bronica PS, the Xenar on the Rolleicord and the whatever is on the front of the Fuji X100S

It does depend on what I am doing... at Duxford airshow the Tamron 150-600 wins hands down!!!

In terms of lenses I like to use, the 85mm 1.8G wins easily, lovely lens. Although I don't have it now the 70-200 VR1 was a good one and my 50mm 1.4 in third.

I guess that most of us go out with the subject matter in mind and then try to take the most suitable lens for the task. It's an indication that a lens is revered when you choose the lens and then try to find suitable subjects.
Zeiss 135/2 APO Sonnar
Canon 200/2 IS
Zeiss 21/2.8
....in no particular order.

Bob

Golly, there are just too many and it's difficult to pick but in no particular order I'll give honourable mentions to...

Voigtlander 25mm f0.95 (for MFT.)
Sigma 85mm f1.4.
Sigma 50mm f1.4.

But the following could easily be better than one or all of the above :D
Sigma 12-24mm.
Sigma 150mm f2.8.
And the technically superb Sony / Zeiss 55mm f1.8 and only slightly lesser
Sony / Zeiss 35mm f2.8.

And for character and want one factors...
Minolta Rokkor 50mm f1.2 and 1.4, 24mm f2.8 and 135mm f2.8.
Olympus Zuiko 28mm f2.8 and 50mm f1.8.

:D

Current:
  • Sony 135 STF - it's what has kept me in the Sony system for this long - challenging to use - but has a certain something even when not used in the classic 'show off the bokeh' mode.
  • Sony 35 F1.8 SAM - cheap noisy plastic that just works
Past:
  • Sony 24-105 - bought as a stop gap - not the best lens in the world, often maligned, but on 6Mp and 12Mp DSLR never let me down, never found anything that really replaced it after I sold it.

I kept wondering whether to make that Sony 35mm f1.8 one of my three. It does more than just work, it's really very good. There are better APS-C 35mm lenses available, but they're lot bigger, heavier, and much more expensive.

Canon 70-200 f2.8 is usm
Canon 100mm macro f 2.8
Canon 35mm 1.4

Hmmmmm.

Well. I'm going to base this on enjoyment not necessity.

Canon 35mm F2 IS
Canon 100-400mm Mk II
Canon 70-200mm Mk II

But if I were to look at my most used... well replace the 100-400mm with the 24-70mm Mk1

These are my top 3 in order:

Nikon 14-24mm f2.8 G AF-S ED
Nikon 70-200mm AF-S Nikkor f2.8G ED VR II
Nikon 24-70mm f2.8 G AF-S ED

Panasonic 12-35mm
Panasonic 20mm
& Samyang 7.5mm fisheye

I have others but these are the ones I use & enjoy the most.

Top three lenses in use at the moment are;
Tamron 90mm macro (gets a lot of use as I work in a historic garden),
Nikon 70-200mm f4
Nikon 18-35mm which is a super little lightweight lens.

Thought long and hard on this one
Canon EF 70-200 f2.8 L non IS
Canon EF 24-70 F2.8 L
Nikon 50mm F1.4G AF-S
