I had to think back...In those days (only 30 years ago FFS!), most cameras came with a 'standard' 50mm f/1.8 - zooms were pretty rubbish and fast zooms didn't really exist yet.
My 'second' lens was a 35mm f/2 - Nikon did make a faster one but optically the f/2 was way better. The 50-mil was sold to a colleague immediately afterwards, so the 35-mil became my primary lens.
After that I bought a 105mm f/2.5 for portraiture.
That was it for a very long time.

After I got my D50 I wanted something longer than the 18-55 kit so I bought a Tamron 55-200 on offer at £99 instead of £135.A few weeks later I found a used Nikkor 70-300 for £90 pounds.I thought I did quite well for not much money.

IIRC, it was a Sigma 170-500. I already had a reasonable selection of lenses for use with my film bodies and wanted a long lens to complete the lineup from 12mm upwards. Still saving for the next step - a 300-800!!!

Going back a bit further, the second lens I got when I got back into photography in AF days was a 70-300 AF-G. Actually, that came as part of a 2 lens kit with the F65, along with a 28-70. Way before that, when I first got into the hobby, I'm pretty sure it was a faster 50 or 55 than I was given with the camera - a Pentax S1. After that, I think I got a 135mm for portraits and a little more reach than I already had.

canon 55-250 IS, then 50mm 1.8, then 18-55 IS (to replace non IS), then another 50mm 1.8 (they don't like being dropped!). I wouldn't part with any of them. So light weight for hill walking and really pleased with IQ. Although there are much better lenses out there, for what I do and ease of transport they are perfect.

Are you just curious, which is fair enough, or are you looking for suggestions? What lens did you get with the camera, and what are you keen to shoot?

I'll be getting a Nikon D5000 which comes with an 18-55, I'm keen to shoot landscapes, moving objects (the dogs), and a bit of macro.

yes! you're totally right. I'm thinking 70-200? or would I be better off waiting and going for something else?
