I hope someone else agrees with me here. Searching ebay i found one user selling the following items individually:

Canon 70-200mm L IS USM
Canon EF 16-35mm f/2.8L Mark II USM
Canon EF 50mm f/1.4
Canon EOS 5D Mark II

All listed as mint condition having been purchased last oct from a main dealer and used only once in a weekend, then re-boxed and not touched since. Reason for sale is he is "giving up his photographic hobby"

Call me cynical but who would buy all the above (brand new), to use in one weekend only, re-box to then sell 2nd hand and claim they are giving up this as a hobby?

He is either minted himself and is completely silly with money or a complete liar. Who spends that much on something (claims to be a hobby), then sell it.

I could be wrong entirely of course and its genuine but a better reason for sale is much needed. I could not paste a link but search for seller misterwogan.

I'm only doubting myself as he has 100% positive feedback
 
This is more common than you think. See a hobby, think you would like it, start out with the best because the sales person heard you say you liked bokeh and low light, then realise it wasn't for you because it weighs a ton and requires more work than you thought. Happens with other hobbies all the time, it just so happens hobbies are not cheap. They happened to buy the best when they started out, not start slow and work their way up.

Besides, where do you think the camera shops who buy used gear get their bodies with low shutter clicks and mint glass? Demos? Guess again. Guys like the one posting in eBay.

I'm a former motorcycle rider. The used bike market is full of mint bikes with all the accessories having only been ridden a handful of times, just like photography.

Agreed. Same with golf and fishing, in my experience.

Or as above, very common in expensive hobbies. There are many more people with more money than sense than you gove credit for.
 
Regardless of the rights and wrongs this is quite normal as loads of people start a hobby then decide it's not for them. I agree that it can be frustrating to think about newbies to photography buying top gear - like people who buy a Gibson Les Paul to learn to play the guitar.

Putting the whole 'learner' thing to one side - even on here I'm gobsmacked at the activity of some folk in the classifieds.

Of course the other issue could be the partner has just found out how much he spent, or they've been made redundant, or just had a huge bill in.
 
Some people are loaded and can afford to try something for one weekend only to then give it up :)
 
my grandad did this all the time - I used to liken it to women who use 'retail therapy' = buying clothes they never wear...

some of his very expensive and short-lived hobbies included budgie keeping, fly fishing, electronic organs, hi fi (when it was 'new') etc
 
He could be intimidated by it all. I know I was just by my s1730 alone (moving up from a digital camera to SLR.) It could be nerves, or something sinister..well you never know with ebay? is he a new seller/ratings good? if anyone bought the camera the advantage would obviously be records of transaction taking place aswell as the component numbering if you was unfortunate to find yourself caught-short.

But I think its more than likely this guy either took a first glance at the manual and just got brain-fried, or was expecting to pay less for the additional costs.
 
Who knows? It's all relative, really. I can't afford to buy expensive gear, but some people wouldn't consider this extravagant. I've known, and still know, quite a few people who could buy everything on the list with no more concern than picking up a newspaper.
 
See, I like mountain biking. Lots of my friends do too, other friends come along, think its amazing after a weekend in Wales and buy a £3k bike on 0% finance. A year later when they've never ridden it, they go away diving and suddenly they must have all the gear for that sport, or kayaking, climbing, playing guitar etc etc. My dad has a nice DSLR (canon of some sort). Never takes it off auto and uses it as a point and shoot on holiday once a year. Its his money, he can do what he likes IMO! Grab a bargain!
 
I currently have 2 r/c planes that I paid a fair bit of money for but have never flown and am likely to never fly. Circumstances change, commitments change.
 
I had a look at this guy on eBay to see if I could get a bargain and as always checked through his sales and feedback looks like either this person buys all makes of camera gear and then re sells it for profit or likes to try all brands for a bit sell it a d try something else lol don't think IMO he brought the canon gear for a hobby he didn't like erm !
