Your photography pet hates

People who ask for advice/help then don't reply or say thanks when it is given.

I hate that too, you take the time to make a comment, and you don't get a thanks, I agree, I disagree, or whatever... And then when you look to see if the haven't been on lately you see a couple of other threads they've started over a short time and done the same thing in everyone. If you don't want feedback, don't appreciate or can't be a*sed to reply when people have taken the time to comment, then don't post pictures. :bang:

And on forums in general the Grammar Nazi

I don't pull people up on it but Cannon for Canon, lens for Lens and loose for lose really annoy me. I mean, how may times a day do you see the words Canon and Lens on this site a day?

:plusone: on the former point + also people who start multiple threads asking the same question

The gf moaning about me taking my camera with me everywhere and when I dont have it with me, she always says at one point, shoud have had your camera with you, that would make a great picture :bonk::bonk::bonk:

I hate it when people ask me what power my zoom lens is - 50X, 100X, and I have to say - "No idea mate, it is a 70 - 210, which equals 315 at the long end on my camera", and then they just look at me as if I have emerged from the Jurassic period.

She must know my wife:lol::lol::lol:

Canon v Nikon v Sony etc :shake:

And that somehow you must owe a prime lens,i know they can be very useful, but not everybody need them :D

This, and five editions of a similar mediocre image, one in mono, one in selective colour, one in sepia, one in eye-searing oversaturated colours and one in some weird blue tone, as if that somehow makes the shot better.

Also overdone HDR, the kind that makes your eyes bleed. I have nothing against HDR if it is used to recreate a shot that your eyes have seen but which the camera can't capture, it is the world's end dark skies and scarily saturated landscapes that offend.

Other than that I am pretty easy going.

"scarily saturated landscapes" and then I take a glance at your signature pics.....:lol::lol:

Because that was all natural light yeah? And yes, meant as tongue in cheek / jovial / humourous.

the 99.999% of people on TP who don't understand........ Pentax is the final solution.:thumbs:

the 00.001% of people on TP who thinks Pentax is the final solution.

Sorry, couldn't resist. :p

Heathen. I'll wager 5 guineas, you can see King's Lynn from your house.

The "casual" passer by who hovers behind you watching intently whilst you shoot, and then makes the inevitable statement "There's a few bob's worth of kit there" or "I had a SoCankon 999 Mk46.5 a few years ago. 'Course that was when you needed skill to take a good snap" etc.

I had one bloke come out with "that's a big camera" the other day. What was I supposed to say to that? "Well I'm compensating for the atrophied dimensions of a part of my anatomy"?

I suppose then my pet hate is barmy comments from a certain type of person.

I dunno but when people take offence to someone commenting on their kit, as cor! That's a big camera or bet that takes nice photos then mentioning it to other photographers seems to me like bragging. To me it reads as "someone with less understanding than i thought my gear looked the business and now i must share it with like minded others" i see it as a bit snobbish, of course casual observers don't know about the ins and outs of what we do as a hobby or profession, neither do most care. It is mostly just uneducated compliments. I say lets not get up our own arses about it and be a little more gracious.

I didnt realise how much of a grumpy sod i was until i read throught all the posts and most of them struck a chord with me:lol:

But people on here who complain about the horizon being slightly out.

Light trail pictures do my head in, there are only so many motorway pictures you can take at night.

Poeple who heavily critise pictures on here but when the post their own up they are very mediocre.

The "rules" of photography if you like your own pictures take them how you like.

Complaints about noisy pictures, no one saya anything when is a grainy picture from film.

Photographs of cras or bikes on jaunty angles that makes them think its "sporty" i just get a pain in the neck trying to look at them then dont bother to look at the rest even though they are probably better than first ones.

oooohhhh i feel better now ive got that of my chest:thumbs:

Oh, I forgot one.

Mac users, who think they are sooo superior to everyone else.

+1 ...Actually make that +100 !

My pet hates in no real order...

HDR for everything even photos which the camera can easily cope with
"nifty", "tog" and other irritating abbreviations!
Black and white/mono. Ugh. Die die die die

Another thing I hate (yes I know I have mentioned it before!) is the snobbery that exists to mobile phone photography.

Just thought of another one!

Photographers being interviewed in a camera magazine and they are posing action like with their camera at the ready just if to tell us that they are a photographer - we already know that because we are reading the mag you are in!

People who 'expect' discounts on photographic equipment when purchasing from retailers. I work in a photographic shop and about 60% ask for discount. Do these people go into Tesco and ask for 30p off a pint of milk?....no so why do it elsewhere? There is so little profit in photo gear it's amazing some businesses are still afloat!

Also people who give crit on my images when i have not asked for it. There is a button for critique so if i want it i'll ask!

There's no harm in asking.

Tesco's etc is different, groceries are not high value items. More expensive stuff in Specialist type places (inc the likes of Currys), so Cars, TVs, Cameras.

You don't even have to offer a discount on the main item, a free or cheap Sandisk 4Gb CF card or whatever is a nice touch instead.

The people who think they're better than everyone else cause they only use Manual, and ridicule people who don't always use Manual, and only shoot Raw so they can make a completely different photo in PP ! So What !! I use TV, AV and M when I need to and shoot mainly Jpeg's cause I don't need to alter everyone of my photos and use Raw when I want to.

If people ask for critique and the horizon is out, surely it is fair to draw their attention to it and point out something they may have missed. I am yet to see a non horizontal horizon in a seascape.

I think you'll find that the ed / photographer for the mag / art director instructing them to pose like that.

People who contradict themselves  ;)

Implying that you must learn and shoot with film to be a better photographer. Welcome to 2012 and the digital age.

If the criticism is justified what difference does it make what the critic's own pictures are like?

I know when (enter footballer's name here) has played badly, but know even when they are injured are better footballers than me. ;)

Generally food, which is the majority of Tesco's items for sale are not easily available a lot cheaper on the Internet. Photography shops are also a lot smaller than supermarkets, so the salesperson is dealing with smaller stock and is sometimes empowered to bargain to get the sale, or can easily get a Manager to make a decision.

And if you don't ask you don't get. ;)

If you put pictures on the Internet, what is your aim, for people just to admire and praise?

I think of the Critique option as an encouragement for people to look at a picture in a more critical way, maybe because the Poster is unsure about certain apsects of the image they've posted. I didn't know I was not supposed to say anything critical of images posted without the Critique option chosen.

people whinging about all things photography, i,m a truck driver and every where i go i get called "drive", my mother named me mike.

people who don't realise that by posting pictures in a section named "feedback and critique" they are implicitly asking for feedback and critique . For those who only want people to go "ooooh" theres a board called photos for pleasure in "the bit at the bottom of the forum" where critique is banned

Post in 'Photos for Please' then, with is specifically tagged as not for critique. All the other sharing forums are critique accepted by default. Alternatively use Flickr. Surely you've still got room for improvement and can learn something?

how using photoshop is somehow frowned upon or wrong

how your so good cos you dont use photoshop

the manual brigade as stated before

someone who buys a D3, then a D3s then pre orders a D4 to shot `snapshots`that my mum can do better with her point and shoot

The people who think they're better than everyone else cause they only use Manual and only shoot Raw ! So What !!

The irony of this is that I only shoot raw because I have far more chance of rectifying all my mistakes afterwards. If I was better, I'd probably shoot jpeg more often.

I'm so rubbish, all my shots need fixing before I'm happy with them, never mind anybody else:D

My having appalling colour vision. Gawd I hate that!

Am I allowed to hate everything in this thread (including opposite viewpoints simultaneously) and the thread itself?

Or is that too much hate for Friday afternoon?

Hate is a strong word, perhaps you could really really not like it instead ?

No! and Yes respectively.

POETS!

Nearly every single shot I take requires 1.5 degrees of clockwise rotation. At least I'm consistently bad!

Ditto both these. I don't think that I've ever taken a shots that doesn't require some measure of adjustment, especially when it comes to levelling.

A rather wise head told me that images are what the camera takes (Frac! :p ), and photographer then converts them to photographs.
