I have a Sigma 15-30mm f/3.5-4.5 EX DG ASPHERICAL **** I will use on my Canon EOS5D. I used it originally on my EOS 3... but to be honest it's never had that much use...

What are peoples thoughts on this lens? Do you have one... could you post some pics you have taken with it????

I find it's results to often be a bit wackey and have funny bendy lines that I kind of didn't want at the wider angles.

If I bought a 24 -105L... would this actually be wide enough for most of my landscape needs?

Would I get good resale on ebay for this lens? Or would I be better off just keeping it also...

I guess I never did much research when I bought it... and what I want to ask is... do people actually think its a good lens?

Mark

There are 77 people's opinions of it on Fred Miranda - more than you're likely to get here. The short version - it's pretty good. 88% of the reviewers would recommend it. The main plus points seem to be sharpness, build quality, and field of view on full-frame. The main minus points seem to be a susceptibility to flare, and the unprotected front element.

Only you can answer that. What focal length do you use for landscapes at present?

Something tells me that's not likely to be a fact that many people have in their heads. Is there any particular reason why you're effectively asking people to research it for you, rather than research it yourself? ;)

Thanks for that review site info.

I generally shoot my landsape at whatever the pic I see dictates... Hence I prefer zoom lenses at this stage in my photography life... I would say if I was specifically out on a day of landscape photography I dont have an issue as I just swap my lens... It comes when Im maybe out and about for the day... I dont really want the hassle of carrying the two lenses as it means rather than my wee css toploader bag I need to carry my bigger low pro full outfit bag... and often when I just have my 28 - 135 on I want to screw the lens that bit wider... I rarely find on such a day I want to screw more telephoto... hence why I think if I was upgrading id go for the 24 - 105... However maybe I use that 105 -135 range more than I think.

The reason why Im asking for others peoples opinions is the same reason as why anyone asks anything on here! Most of you guys have more experiance or time... also im not actually asking for you to conduct research... Im just asking what you think... I wont take anyones opinion and then come and back and castigate it up if I dont agree with them!

OMG... you can clearly see the sharpness falling away at the edges... I've never really seen it in my shots but then again iv prob never looked...

You any idea at what focul length this becomes unnoticable?

Or does it do it right through...

I guess im at the stage in my photography where im taking the step from basic to keen amature and I need to know this sorta stuff because to be honest the books iv read dont tell you!

I borrowed one of these the other week....

Three issues:

1) slow focus. Ok, none of this sort of glass is really going to be "fast" but it was quite noticeable

2) The hood/filter holder thing doesn't firmly lock on and can and does fall off

3) More flares than a hippy convention. I have never seen so much lens flare in fact and that was with the hood on (it hadn't fallen off at the point)

The image results are ok (apart from the flare!) - the reason why my friend has it is because on the severe lack of choice for a wide angle on his MkIIN (because its 1.3x crop... and doesn't take EFS mounts). Short of a really expensive bit of glass, this is pretty much the only choice...

Steady on, Mark ... What I read into that test is that the Sigma 15-30mm is noticeably sharper than the Sigma 12-24mm. I can't see anything for you to be particularly worried about.

(Or to be more precise ... this particular copy of the Sigma 15-30mm is noticeably sharper than this particular copy of the Sigma 12-24mm, when used on this particular camera and shot at these particular settings. Its not necessarily a good idea to extrapolate too far beyond this specific test.)

I had one for a while as I wanted a wide lens on my 10D (pre EFS). I found it was a good lens and I was pretty happy with it. Didn't ever try it on full frame though.

Any one else with any thought on this lens... do you have one... id it the lens you hoped for when you bought is... post pics if you have any good examples of its use!

Thanks

Keep it. :)

I bought one for the 5D (I also now have a 1Ds II) so both full frame. I've got the 24-105mm as well and I added the 15-30mm Sigma because I did want something a fair bit wider. If you look at the stuff a lot of folks here shoot with the Sigma 10-20mm it's stunning. Having FF, the 10-20mm is a no go for us and the 15-30mm is a really useful addition. Yes the focus is slow, but for landscapes I dont care! Focus manually if it annoys you.

I think this is one I took the first time I used it :)

This one is 28mm according to the EXIF so, yes I could have taken it with the short end of the 24-105mm.

Oh I think I will keep it.... Im thinking I need to use it more...

Anyone got any other pics or experiances with one... how did you like it or not?

Post your pics???
