Well the weather has been great for the past few days and I was out in the garden yesterday sitting in a chair and relaxing with my camera in my lap waiting for any birds to come into view, when the neighbors drove up th drive. Anyway, I know it's random but I had a thought which is this:

What do your neighbours think of your photography?

Are they all for it, do they not like it, or do they not know?

It's just I've become increasingly aware when out in the garden and there is a fence seperating one of my neighbours where a lot of birds gather (ideal photo opportunity). I point my lens in that direction and fire away but I have this concious thought that they think I am taking pictures of their house or similar

I was just wondering what everyone else has to say?

My Neighbour.... Is a photographer! :D He quite often goes on safaris and sells some of his wildlife shots. One problem I have now though is that his garden is getting so good for birds that its stealing them out of my garden. :(

My neighbours dont take any notice really.
To the one side of me, they are fabulous friendly people with a beautiful garden, & gorgeous flora.
Theyre away a lot & I look after the place, they said Im welcome to take my camera round any time I like ... though I do wonder what other peeps in the street would make of me going to collect up their mail with a camera in my hand!

My neighbours generally don't follow me into town where I take photos. I'm never in the garden doing macro shots of bits n pieces so they never see me work. However they have seen me in the papers and heard me on the radio :D They keep telling my parents how proud they are so its all good.

My immediate neighbours are both a fair bit older than me, and even without taking pictures they think I an nuts (in a nice way!) so they just ignore what I am doing as I'm quiet and we all get on ok!

i live in a flat in london. One of the sad things about the state of London (and the UK) is the flats are mainly rented and people only ever stay 6-12months. Once you have said hello to your neighbours they are gone and then there are new people. By they time you've said hello to the new people then you have gone.

I wanted to take a picture of a lilly which has just flowered in my garden today, it was against my neighbours fence and his 3 kids were out. Camera stayed in the house.

Gary.

Good choice, even though you would be innocently taking a picture in your garden it could have dire results if you did - this is what i hate - the fact that you can't take a picture in your own garden because you fear the outcome!

I'm not sure my neighbours would recognise a camera if they fell over one. I think they've made their mind up I'm from another planet anyway so I really couldn't care less what they think about my obsession with photography.

Funnily enough I went to a residents meeting last night and one of my lady neighbours said " Cedric, I hope you don't mind me asking but I saw you out in the garden the other day with a big telescope thing. What on Earth were you looking at?"

I said "It's the woman at No 47 in the next street across the park - she's got the most fantastic bum!" :D

I did actually explain afterwards.

Apart from a passing hello we have little to do with our neighbours, and hopefully it will stay that way.

Don't get a house with a shared driveway... One of good neighbours moved out and the new one takes liberties - parking 2 cars back to back which makes it difficult to get out, and he's paved over his front lawn and sticks a motorbike or a fiat panda on it - which I'm sure is against covanents in the deeds of the house.

My neighbours see me out in the garden taking pics regularly and seem to think that makes me a free photoshop service for sorting out their appalling photos. I think they have got the message that I don't do that on behalf of others now so leave me alone. The last time they approached me was to take their daughters head off one picture and graft it onto a photo of her in her prom dress as she had multiple chins in the prom dress pic . I declined.

There is only fear because we allow it to perpetuate, my neighbours kids certainly wouldn't stop me taking my camera into my own garden to take photo's if the neighbours object that is there own problem. I'd love to know what these supposed dire consequences of taking a picture of a lilly in you own garden are!

one side of me is rented they are odd and change all the time and the old couple the other side think we are a little ecentric

My neighbours, only have them on one side thankfully are a noisy, nosy old couple, (yes, even older than me).

We exchange pleasantries but that’s about it.

If they ever said anything about my photography I’d say I was building a case against them to send to the local council.

I wanted to use my 180mm sigma macro, a big beast. Last thing I want is someone starting a bloody rumour, "Oh I saw gary in his back garden with a massive telescope thing on his camera, he was hanging about our fence whilst the kids were playing"....

3 weeks later
"A man is in hospital after beeing attacked by a group of youths outside his Edinburgh home. The drunk group were shouting abuse as Mr X left his house, and after an exchange of words, Mr X was attacked with planks of wood and rocks..."

Stuff like this really happens, and I would rather not to me.

Saying that I do live in a very nice street, but at the end of the day, young kids, running about topless next to my garden is enough to put me off using my camera in their general vicinity.

Gary.

I totally agree, do what u like in your back garden. people with kids get far too much freedom to do and please am fed up with it affecting everybody else life, just cos they have children.

Respect your opinion and your right to choose, but it is this sort of crazy thinking that is already changing the face of 'freedom' in this country and if we just accept it nothing will ever change it will only get worse.

I assume you are not one of the 'millions' of peadophiles hanging out on every street corner, in every park and behing 99% of hedges so you should feel free to go about your business.

It's only crazy thinking due to the crazy actions of others who are the paranoid ones. Why don't you go to your local park with a camera, and start taking pictures of all the swings, roundabouts and other toys, with a big lens - make sure its really busy when you do. Go on your own, telephoto should do the trick.

I suspect you will quickly feel very vurnerable. No fault of yours, but not a nice feeling to have either.

We have nicknamed our next door neighbour as the wicked witch of the east, she's a widow in her late 70's and about as friendly as a axe giving you a centre parting. I've been wrongly accused of quite a few things from her despite warning letters being sent to her by a solicitor. I put it down to her age and don't dare to have the camera out when she's about. As much as I would'nt like to see anyone ill the sooner she pops her clogs the better for us all.

We get on well with both our neighbours, I'm looking after one sides cats next week, and we're always chatting to the other side.. they've got no problem with me & my camera, although I don't point it at their kids, for obvious reasons.

That said.. we do have a resident nutter, who tried the other day to fine me £100 for parking on the road, rather than my driveway :p
