Your biggest holiday destination disappointment?

South of France.

Someone I know recently came back from vegas and was very disappointed
Have been lucky not had a bad holiday yet :)

i have to say Zante full of Russians where we were.

The island of Capri - totally overpriced, heaving with people, and the focal point seemed to be the square at the top, which is full of high end shops.
We couldn't wait to get away from it, and fortunately it was only a day trip.

It was 15 years ago, we were taken in by the brochures which told us that Andorra wasn't just a ski resort but was also a great summer destination. Given that half the places were closed and what was left open wasn't exactly welcoming. There was nothing to do in the evenings so we ended up spending them in the English run bar at another hotel.

Best the place had to offer was the horse riding and tax free shopping but you can only do so much of that in 2 weeks.

And soon there won't be any tax free shopping!

I love vegas <3

Hell Andorra is bad enough in the winter!

Benidorm although i wasn't expecting much, i was a little surprised what a ****** hole it was.

When I was young (around ten I think) my family went on a camping trip to a place on the Costa Dorada. The place itself was OK (it was fairly isolated, so not much to do other than the pool and beach and car on the campsite in the evening), and there was a go-kart track just across the road from the entrance, but...

... when we arrived on the coach the people already there were waving toilet rolls at us, and it wasn't long until we found out why. We spent (I got it the worst) the next ten days in almost constant discomfort, spending more time than I care to remember on the toilet. Those toilets being of the "squat and drop" variety! D:

To top it all off, a few days before we were due to come home my Dad was bitten by a mosquito and it became infected. So he spent the last few days with the lower part of one arm in a cast (did wonders for the tan on that arm... not).

I can't remember the name of the town (Costa Dorada is an area I believe), but the site was called (excuse my spelling) "La Ballena Allegra" which translates to something like "The Laughing Whale".

On the positive side we met a really lovely group of Italian men on that trip who gave me my confidence in the water (I could swim, but was far from confident) and we're never short of amusing stories to reminisce over when we get onto the subject of past holidays. I also now seem to have a concrete constitution!

Other than that, we've been lucky so I can't complain.

Man, now I'm tempted to Google that place and see if it still exists.

Another vote for Las Vegas here. Luckily it was just three days out of an epic three week road trip.

Mine too - we were staying on Balboa Island and nipped up to Vegas for a couple of days - imagine the contrast

I've never understood the appeal of Vegas (I could maybe spend a day there with a camera in tow). With that said, my uncle went recently for his 60th with a few people and loved it. He did come back significantly poorer though...

Another vote for Vegas, and I ended up going back twice for my sins.

What's wrong with Russians?

I'm surprised so many people are disappointed with Las Vegas, what do you expect going there? It's a manufactured town that is world famous for being what it is..

Don't think I've ever been disappointed with a holiday destination, there are interesting people everywhere.

You're right about Las Vegas being famous for what it is. I'm going to fail to express why I was disappointed with it, but it just seemed not quite as glitzy as it makes itself out to be........

Barrow in Furness. You'd think given it's proximity to the lakes and being the largest centre of civilisation thereabouts that it would be a smart place, oh hell no, don't think I've been anywhere more depressing, makes Blaenau Ffestiniog and Merthyr Tydfil look utopian!

Re Vegas, I didn't know it would be full of America's worst...

As for Russians, my first exposure to them was in Sharm el Sheikh. I couldn't believe how nasty and rude they were to the waiters. Here, they are buying lots of property so I'm seeing them more and more, and my opinion is only being re-enforced.

Completely agree - it was just so shabby and tacky - not what I expected at all.

We love Las Vegas (2 visits), and we don't gamble.

First impressions of London (Earls Court), England, were not all that favourable, probably due to having 3 weeks in the UK countryside before hand (which we loved), however it grows on you after a while and our 2nd visit 7 years latter when we stayed a 10 minute walk from Trafalgar Square in a hotel on the Thames it was great.

New Forest. Extremely overpriced camping with extremely limited facilities. Quite pretty but after visiting the Motor Museum at Beaulieu, we'd had enough so came home.

We had issues with Russians in Crete this year. There have been a few here and there for a while but this year they seem to be invading en masse. The first problem we had was with their lack of reading - the passport gates are clearly marked in Greek, English and pictograms as to which gates are for EU residents and which are for "aliens" but since the queues for the EU gates were moving faster (due to us all having passports ready and being EU members), they moved over, reducing the movement to less than a crawl (and got very heated with the officials when it was pointed out that they were in the wrong queue). That was bad enough but then they started peeing on the floor...
After that, we tried very hard to avoid them - luckily, the areas we stay in are relatively free of them but when we did see (and hear - can they actually talk or do they always shout?) them, they were invariably rude to waiters and other staff and were also likely to take a 5 fingered discount if their (usually derisory) offers of lower prices were refused.

Barrow in Furness. !

The biggest cul-de-sac in the country.. not a nice place at all

Benidorm although i wasn't expecting much, i was a little surprised what a ****** hole it was.

The smell.. OMG the smell.. what a dry smelly horrible place.. can't believe I let my family talk me into it .

South of France.

You must have been unlucky mate.. been france loads.. inc south.. always find the french friendly and welcoming everywhere.. loverly country all round... just dont tell everyone I said that :)

Benidorm oh my god what a crud hole.

Been to Vegas and loved it, going back again in 2016 after a long road trip.

Never really had a bad holiday, I think its because I never go package holidays, always book my own place and make sure I have a car to drive and see the place I am visiting.

I think holidays are what you make them, not many places are the same as where you live, and to be totally honest if a visiter came to your town what would they think?? specially a mainstream town/city.

knowing where to go on a holiday makes a difference as well, tourist places are always going to be over priced, crowded and full of people all after the same thing, keep off the beaten track and see the real country.

Off to Spain this year and the worst bit i am not looking forward to is taking my daughter to Portaventura as I despise these [places but she likes them.

Yet people flock there in millions! Why????????

Cheap? It's must be the cost because it has nothing to offer as a holiday destination unless of course you work in a sewerage works and want to know what real filth is.

Anyone who is being talked into going there DON'T GO. :shake:

For me, it was Las Vegas. Full of American trailer trash.

Yours?

Hell yeah - I was sooo disappointed with Vegas - like Blackpool on speed :(

Someone I know recently came back from vegas and was very disappointed

I went there earlier this year, and despite not quite being 21 and not being able to gamble/drink etc still loved it.

Taking a helicopter down the strip at night will stay with me, it was amazing.

I've had a few running s with Russian customers myself on my ebay store.

Not a holiday destination but went to Singapore for a period with work.

Was like a worse version of Canary Wharf - full of people who are only concerned about what others think of them - not for me; most of them very rude and full of their own self importance.

They have Chanel and Gucci shops the same size as our Primark stores but when I walked past they were always empty; is all about the perception.
