Hi,

Im trying to find a beginners photography course in Yorkshire / Northern England. I've learnt quite a bit from various books, websites etc. but just need a little help changing the theory into practice. Discussing things with people helps me learn.

I have looked a courses at local collages, Hull, but I work away from home so would miss more than I would attend. I've also looked at a few online courses but don't know what they would give me that I cant get from website tutorials.

Does anyone have any suggestions?

Thanks,
Bue

Join a local camera club and find some other togs in the area, one thing thats amazed me from day one is the help and guidance other togs will give.

My local club is a great one recent events have included a studio session with model covering basic studio light setup as well as the traditional competition which are more a chance to show off your work and recevie positiove criticism.

Hi

Not sure whereabouts in Yorkshire you are but keep an eye of for York College. They do photography night school and go though settings etc. I'm hoping to Enrol for September.

You could book a day or a couple of days on a 1-to-1 basis with someone who runs courses. You will learn lots and all at your own pace. Check the net or photography magazines for someone in your area.

Or have you tried to find a meet up?
Look up for one in your area.
Or get Bryan Peterson, Understanding exposure.

Camera clubs & local colleges arn't much good for me as I work away so arn't home much. I've got lots of books & read websites but think I would benifit some structured learning.

What do people think about online courses where you get tutor feedback? Also considering the OU Digital photography course.

When you say you work away what do you mean.
If you know where you are going to be working ie that week, try tag along on a meet. Check your area as alot of people here are prepared to help.

Google > "photography workshops {area you need}" should help you find a one-to-one or group workshop. Personally I'm sceptical about distance learning for something like this, a day with a pro tog is a usefull exercise IMO.

The OU course looks quite interesting but I would still advocate one or 2 days on a 1-2-1 basis with someone.

Have a look at the School of Photographic Imaging (SPI) run by, AFAIA, IPC, publishers of Amateur Photographer and What Digital Camera?

I've heard nothing but praise from those who have taken a course with them, you can do them at your own pace, there's a dedicated forum for students and you get the one on one feedback from a tutor that's essential for good learning.

Either that or if you're ever near Harrogate and want to take half a day to go out and about I'm happy to teach you what I can in the time.

Have you had a look on the east riding website? There is digital photography for beginners course starting in sept at brid and driff (5 weeks), hornsea, goole (8 weeks). or city and guilds level 1 at brid and driff, cottingham, goole or south holderness - 22 weeks long. I did city and guilds level 1 at south holderness this year and it was great - signing on for level 2. applications open tomorrow at 9.
