Going over to York by train on 1st May but only for 4 days, anywhere not to far from the rail station that may find some birds (The feathered kind). Thank You, Russ.

Are you limiting yourself to York City Centre or do you have ideas of going into the Yorkshire coutryside?

Will be just around the city as have to small problems, (1) The wife will be with me:) and (2), No car.

You might be stumped for exotic birds in York city centre. And four days in York itself is probably two too many. I would be looking to photograph other subjects and ranging outside the city.

There are museums; The National Railway Museum and the Jorvik Centre. Or take a day trip by train to Malton for the morning then onto Pickering for the afternoon. At Pickering you could take an old train ride on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway. Get off at Levisham where the track runs along a river valley through moorland or Grosmont which is up on the moors.

Hi, Many thanks for that, not my idea to visit York but the wife always wanted to go and see the city.

No problem. Have a look at Castle Howard too. It isn't that far and there may be public transport connections.

Walk round the wall, that adjoins greenery in some places, clergy gardens I assume.

Let's add the Merchant Adventurers' Hall, BarleyHall, walk the snickleways (and get the book!), possibly a river trip, York Minster, the chocolate story (or similar name), the Shambles, etc. etc. Then there are the specialist shops, tea rooms...

Thank you for the advice (Up the Albion) Russ.

Perhaps forget birds and just enjoy the city, it is a fine place.

Just in case you 're into Roman remains, the Roman Bath pub has visitable remains in the basement.

That's a shame (the second point, not the first)... As I was going to recommend York Bird of Prey Centre which is 12 miles away from the city centre. An extremely good day out and very welcoming of photographers. I've been two or three times and even got to hold a Golden Eagle. They are a rescue centre too so it isn't just the equivalent of a bird zoo.
