Well, what a mistake it was getting directed to this site.

I posted up what I thought was an innocent question on another forum -"What Camera should I get?" and was given a link to here and was told that "they would sort you out".

I have spent the last couple of hours ignoring my in-tray and instead looking at the various topics. I am really thankful that I cannot see members' photos on my work PC otherwise I would get absolutely nothing done :D

I am now faced with more questions than answers - some I am ok(ish) about - f stops, ISO etc but what is/are prime lenses? Are the ones supplied with the camera sub-prime?

It is time to move on from my point-and-shoot camera - though it is handy to stuff in a trouser pocket when on holiday  but fiddling about with that has woken up my creative side - had a SLR years ago but (a Zenith (sp?)) so have a basic understanding - just hope I can remember it all!

I do not need something costing mega-bucks and already done a bit of research and leaning towards a Nikon D3100 (or do I wait until the 3200 price drops a bit or is there a better alternative? - see more questions than answers!) as this has "live-mode" and is, apparently, a "good thing to have".

Well, that's enough about my basic requrements and a little "hello" from me to you all. I can see that I am going to spend many hours in here. I just hope my boss does not catch me

Now off to the 3100 owners section to have a look at what they think about - is there anywhere else that a novice should look at (done the rules bit)?

Welcome aboard Zoomboxer.
To answer your first question a prime lens is one with a fixed focal length, that is to say not a zoom lens of variable focal length. Hope that clears that one up for you. Take a look in the Tutorials and Guides section loads of info in there.
