Yes
Right then guys I have only had my first DSLR for a few weeks and already I feel the need to get some decent telephoto glass! Only got the standard 500D kit lens at the moment and really need something with a bit more reach.

Have been looking at the Canon 70-300 IS USM and Canon 70-200L F4 and really cannot make up my mind!

I really see getting the 70-200L as more of an investment as it being a luxury lens it should hopefully last me years to come etc. I mostly shoot landscapes and 'general' sort of photography at the moment and i'm wondering how useful the image stabilization would be on the 70-300?
Any help is welcome at this stage!

Many thanks :)

The IS is very usefull, esp at the longer length, both of these lenses are very good, the 70-200 F4 L is a very nice lens, the 70-300 IS is also very good and is generally classed as the non L "L" series lens (if that makes sense!), gives you an extra 100mm and IS over the 70-200 F4.

Don't think you'd be disappointed with either lens, if you decide if you need the extra 100mm or not, this might help with your desicion, as would your finances, don't forget the cheaper 55-250IS lens aswell.

Good luck with your search

I have the 500D and bought the 55-250 EFS lens to go with it as I had read that this lens was better optically than the 70-300, particularly for the money! (Can't vouch for this but I am happy with the 55-250)

I bought it from Martins Cameras (checkout www.camerapricebuster.co.uk for latest prices)

So far I have been impressed with the lens although it is clearly a budget lens and does feel a little on the 'plasticky' side it is a good first zoom lens until I can afford/justify better...

Just a thought, you say you like taking landscapes so would a shorter lens not be your better bet.
I can understand for general overall photography get a longer lens as thats what I did but then landscapes are not on my list of prioraties.

I have the canon 75-300mm non iS and still learning to use it but i am very happy with it.

55-250, good to very good image quality, IS, very small, light build, exceptional value.

70-300, very good image quality, well made, IS, very good value, not to be confused with poor 75-300!

70-200L 4 non-IS, exceptional image quality, very well made, robust, modest range, no IS, quite big, fair value.

IMHO, big drawback of the cheapest 70-200L is no IS and short range. 55-250 is great on a budget. 70-300 IS is the obvious best all-round choice

I am looking at the Tamron 18-270 f3.5-6.3 Di ll VC for Canon EF-S and then might get a 2 X extender for my bird shots

I think you will struggle with a 2x on that lens. Focus will be very slow at best and i wouldnt expect much in IQ.

To the OP the 70-200 f4 is a cracking lens for the money especially if you pick up one 2nd hand. The 70-300 IS again is a very good lens and the IS is very handy.

The 50-250 always gets good reviews especially for the low cost ive never used that one so cant comment.

As Euan says, that combination will be hopeless. In fact I'm not sure any teleconverter will actually fit as the back element of EF-S lenses extends too far back. The Tamron may well be the same.

70-200 f4L is what I'd have for an 'all rounder' its supremely sharp fast ish durable and light

I've used one and its lovely (I own the 2.8)
