I have a Canon 500D and a 430EX11 Speedlite. I'd like to try bit of basic modeling using the flash off camera, however, it seems this can only be obtained is with another (master) flash on the camera, or is there another way (preferably cheaper) to trigger the flash remotely? I don't really want a flash on the camera. (Not that I've got another one any way.)
 
If you want to retail, E-TTL control, then you either need a wireless master controller on the camera, or you can do it with an extension cord. Cords are cheap, cheapest master is the Yongnuo ST-E2 (ebay £80).

Or manual-only with a radio trigger - Yongnuo RF-602 is usually favourite. £30 off Amazon etc.

toonamp, how long and how often have you been using it, that's normally the acid test?
 
TTL cords are underrated. If I were you and I didnt know much about off camera flash, it would be my first purchase.

Yongnuo ones are good.

If you have a good knowledge of off cam flash, then I would get a manual trigger like the rf602.

Only a matter of months David, but I've used it allmost daily and often in that time.

The one I bought was for £16 or so post free with the two recievers, The wireless trigger fits on the hot shoe and works automatically when the shutter is pressed.

I've adjusted the flash to operate in all formats with no worries in any setting.

For the price I certainly can't complain and find it more than easy to set up and use:)

You'd be mad to buy any other trigger than the rf602 for the price.

I have no idea what the difference in quality is but as you would expect for £16.95 this is not top spec, but it does have locking nuts for both transmitter and receiver. Plus the receiver has an angle adjuster attached.

Your choice, but I went for this cheap option to experiment and to see if I wanted to carry on with off camera flash. I certainly do but if I think of, or need to be upgrading I would go for something better than the RF-602 as it does'nt seem to be worth 3 times the amount ;)
 
It is worth three times the amount.

I have both (4 sets of the cheaper pt-04tm (the set above), and 9 sets of the 602). There are many advantages to the rf602:

1. 2.4ghz signal - extremely important - far more reliable and distance is far superior.

2. proper hotshoe fitting - the cheaper one cannot be used on the hotshoe (even though it looks like it can, because the design is vertical rather than horizontal).

3. Totally different build quality - 602 is vastly superior.

4. Far better connector leads to connect to a studio gun - the pc connection on the pt04tm particularly dicey.

There are many more, but my brain is frazzled.

Don't make the cheap mistakes early on, if you could compare them in your hands you would know the superiority is worth every penny more and then some. I am an extensive user of the £180 per unit pocket wizard (£360 per set), and I prefer the (£25 per set) rf602 system. They are that good. :)

On second thoughts, want to buy four sets of the PT04tm????

I haven't used them in two years....
 
+1 for the RF-602

It's worth it. It's got an established reputation, it can be a flash trigger or a shutter trigger, it will wake most flashes from sleep mode, it's widely distributed and very easy to get additional transmitters/receivers when you want them. And it works.
 
Are the RF602 and the unit toonamp uses, both activated from the camera hotshoe, i.e. no cables, as ideally I need the remote camera trigger to be plugged into the camera.
 
The RF-602 fires from the hot shoe, or it can use a cable connection if required.

Looks like the RF-602. This comes with two receivers so am I right to think it will fire two remote 430EX11s from the camera hot shoe? That would be ideal.
 
Yes.

Transmitter in the hotshoe of the camera.

Receivers on each of your 430exII 'feet'.

To save any confusion about hot shoes, here you can see the transmitter attached to the hot shoe on my 50D and the receiver attached by hot shoe to the flash unit.

I bought it to use as a wireless flash using this set up. That it does and I have no complaints.

Sorry about the quality of the snap, taken with a little point and shoot I carry everywhere :)
