Yet another 52 - The Matt

Time for a catch up from me :D

Love the first Learning shot, very crisp, sharp and well composed, although the 2nd one made me laugh :clap:

As for your Surprise picture, what a great, creative take on the theme, hats of to you, I wouldn't even attempt it :runaway: :clap:

Surprise is different and well thought out.

This week I thought I'd try a diptych. The idea was to show opposites but with similarities. I chose to show a road in the country and a road in the city, one during the day, one at night. Turns out you can't just stick two images next to one another and expect them to work
I'm not unhappy with either image individually, but together I just don't think they work. The similar compositions are too monotonous for my liking, and the colours and brightness are too different. It might have been helped if the compositions mirrored one another, but I tried flipping the country/night image and the bike marking gave it away...
Never the less, here we are: Click me. Linked due to size

This idea is one I'll have to revisit I think.

As you say, both images work individually but they don't have a sense of cohesion side by side. Maybe the same street by day and by night would work better?

That's an idea. I would quite like to revisit the cobbled street at night, but it's not the kind of place I'd want to stand around alone with a few hundred quid's worth of kit after dark. I'll add that to my mental to-do list and go back at some point.
Thanks for the input.

Catch time for a fellow 52er - like Surprise :) thats a fun image and must have taken an age to get just right :) Clever stuff - you have more patience than me Matt :)

The diptych - the opposite concept works for me busy/quiet night/day rushed/calm and the alignment of the yellow lines is neat making the two images a little similar in at least that respect!

Good idea and concept ! And looks okay to me!

Well I am rubbish. Week 6 has come and gone and I'm without my photo. I was really hoping my 50mm f1.8 lens would arrive as I needed it for my idea. Alas the lens is nowhere to be seen yet, but I still should have had a backup plan. I have some catchng up to do.

Don't worry Matt, it's not easy getting the right photo every time. I've missed a week too but you've just got to move on to the next week and maybe catch up on this week when you can.

I have a 50mm f1.8 on order too. You'll love the lens when it finally arrives.

I will still have to get back to you guys on week 6, but her's number 7: Crowds

I shot this in infrared, partially just to see how the 450D and lens coped with it. Thank god for live view is all I can say. You cannot compose with the filter or, nor can you meter properly without live view. With live view, metering isn't bad, but you can barely see what's in shot and focussing is still incredibly tricky. I shall have to try this again when the light is better.

I'm not sure about this, I would have liked to see a bit more definition in the people, if you see what I mean

It's a good concept though

Yeah, I know what you mean and I agree. I am hoping that if I get a shot with light falling directly on to the street, they may show up quite brightly.
I am trying to figure out if there is a street that's busy enough and interesting enough that will have light falling on it at the right time... This one may do in summer. I might have to wait til then.

I agree the people need more definition but I like the idea and it's definately one to re-visit I think

That's a great effort for this weeks subject...

As said just a tad more definition and it would have a amazing shot...

I'm going to agree too, it's all been said. Good idea, the shot needs a bit more definition on the people.

trying something new is what it is all about - although you needed a little more definiation on the people it looks like you got the IR side sorted :)

Ta for feedback. I am still scratching my head trying to think of a place that might give me the lighting I need and enough people...

I'll not repeat what's already been said, there's a great shot here when the tweaks are made.

as has already been said above! Real potential for your revisit of this one. I had quite a lot of trial and error on mine to find what gave me the movement effect i was looking for. Very well done for getting this done in daylight!

I'll go with the other comments great shot, more definition in the people would make it even better.

I really like the idea. I agree that the people are slightly too blurred. I note you had the camera on ISO800 &15 seconds, I don't know about your camera's capabilities but could you have pumped it up a stops to ISO1600 and 7seconds (or ISO3200 and 3.5 seconds). Yes there would be noise but in B&W the noise looks like grain and would add to the image IMO.

Aside from that I think you've composed the image really well with the road leading your eye to the big building (town hall?), good image

Incidentally, do you know how many stops the filter cuts out - I'm asking as I'm thinking about one of the B+W 10 Stop NDs and would like to take this sort of shot (blurred people in daylight - not IR) but I am wondering if 10 Stop is just too much and if I should go for the 6 Stop instead.

Argh, I'm behind by a week. Will catch up, honest. I have a shot or two for 'special' but I don't know that either subject would want their photo putting up here...

In decently strong daylight, iso 100 and f22 can get me a shutter speed of 1-5 seconds with my 6-stop filter. Maybe too quick for this kind of thing... Couldn't tell you how many stops the IR cuts out... Nearly all of the light, but it isn't light I'm trying to record. Then there's the internal filter cutting the amount of IR getting to the sensor... It's too complicated for my mind.

Hmm. I really need to wean myself off dependancy on natural light for still life things as it makes it really difficult to get anything when it's practically dark by the time I finish work.

A sunny morning and a 10:00 start today gave me chance for some catching up, so here's my shot for the theme wealth

A lot of us are counting the pennies at the moment but compared to many who cannot properly house or feed themselves, most of us can still be considered wealthy.

Like the DOF you've got going here Matt - nicely sharp at the top end too!

And the message is clear: wealth is relative !

Very good :)

time to cathc up.... really do like suprise shot, very well done. the crowds shot i think may have been better taken at a slightly faster shutter speed to give the people a bit of definition.
i can see what you mean about the opposites shot. thay are good on their own but something is not quite right when they are together.

wealth shot is good with spot on DoF and very sharp.

goos luck for the rest of the year.....

Nice one for the Wealth theme. Like the depth of field making the stack rise out of the picture.:clap:

Like the DOF and lighting for wealth - only thing I would do is clone out the little speck of dirt in the bottom left corner.

A good take on the theme of Wealth and I bet that stack of coins fell over a few times. :)

I like the control of dof, but I wonder if a very slightly lower angle would have made the 20p piece a little clearer, or perhaps positioning copper coins behind it, rather than silver ones. It's only a small niggle, and I really sympathise with you 'natural light' (or lack of it) problems - it's just never there when you need it. :D

Creative interpretation of Wealth and the DoF and the angle really gives a 3D effect. Be proud of yourself :D :clap:

Considering how far behind I am, I might have to drop this here :(
How do those of you who work full-time pull this off? I just can't seem to come up with a decent idea and execute it well within the space of a week and put in all my hours at work. At least one of those has to give and I don't think my boss would allow it to be the third, much to my dismay.

I'm sorry to hear you feel so much pressure that you want to drop out at this stage....:'(

But remember this is for fun and to sharpen up all our photography...so hang in there and just join in as and when you get the time...

Nobody here would criticise you for not having a shot each week...;)

So just put in your shot when you have the time and we will be glad of your company....

I agree with Spartacus and Angela.

It's for fun and to give a framework for experimenting a bit with photography as far as I'm concerned. Some weeks are 'easier' than others, and often the most popular shots on a particular theme are those that make us smile, or are out of the box/off the wall/just downright nutty. And sometimes the technical merit (or otherwise) isn't the most important thing. :)

Even if you don't post every week, I hope you don't pass on this altogether. :)

Work really impinges on my photography time too and I have to consciously make a decision about how & when I'm going to make time for my 52 each week.

Don't feel bad - the idea (for me anyway) is to get some added inspiration, challange myself, and have fun. It's not another thing to worry about and feel like a trial. A challange yes - but one that I choose to take on and I only have to answer to me if it something goes awry. I have just skipped a week because I was ill - I'm going to come back to it when I can give it the time it deserves. Simple.

My advice is don't make it a massive burden - join in when you can and have fun with it when you have the time. Maybe as the evenings get lighter and the summer roles around you might find that you want to join in again. Don't can it all together - no one is going to bash you for not posting every week and I for one would love to see any shots you do decide to take

I'm back. Tonnes of catching up to do, but I want to take this up again.

Week... I lose count: linear

I've known for ages that around noon this place has the most wonderful light. Every time I've been there at the right time, I've either been in a rush, sans camera or it's been cloudy, til yesterday. I'm not sure I've captured this place the best I can. Another to revisit :)

Do you fellows suppose it would be cheating to submit a photo that wasn't taken for a theme I missed, but was taken at the right time and happens to fit?

Welcome back...

I love the lighting you got going with the Linear shot...and a good angle to boot... excellent...

Go on go for it....
