Weeeeeelllll it's a kinda long story, suffice to say till a couple of hours ago my D70 was in about 20 bits on my desk :D

Hoping to be able to clean it up some, but it's likely doomed for failure... Them be mostly scratches :o

That whole shot above is a flip of the previous one. All the scratches on the left are flipped from above to below. :shrug:

There are actually things LIVING on there, aren't there?! I thought the kitchen at work was a bit grim 'til I looked at that! ;)
 
crikey that first one looks like our kitchen window when we have potatoes on the boil and the second one looks like the same window but HDR'd...that is pretty grim and another reason why I am still a Sensor cleaner virgin!
 
Please people, don't be dettered from cleaning your sensors - this is not a sensor cleaning accident - infact I wouldn't call it an accident at all ~ more of a "work in progress".

All shall be revealed later :D

Hot filter stripped, Kodak 89B filter in place, dust everywhere fingerprints everywhere scratches everywhere, all held togethor with double sided sticky tape (no, really) and quite a few things rattling around when you shake it (wondered what all these screws I have left over were for...)

But it's a start!

Can I just ask WHY????? what is it about these images that is special...they just look all white where they shouldnt be to me

Am I missing something??
 
Because I really, really, really like infra red.

I was on the verge of selling the D70 (got a D200, and whilst I use the two as a combo sometimes, I can manage with one body) - and whilst I could really do with the cash, it was oh-so-tempting to have a crack at turning it into a full time IR camera. I've been uhming and ahing over it for a few days, and today I had a crack at it.

editty : and no, you're not missing anything - as you say, just white where they shouldn't be. Different things reflect different amount of infra red light, just as different things reflect different amounts of visible light - but there's often a large disparity between visible reflectivity and infra red reflectivity.

I've often thought of doing similar to an old P&S digital camera..... one day I'll get round to it.

Hope you took plenty of work in progress pictures to terrify the faint hearted :lol:

Unfortunately not - although I'll undoubdetly need to venture back inside, so I'll try and remember to take some snaps of my shoddy workmanship :geek:

Technically you can do this to any digicam which has some inherent IR sensitivity (which I think is all...), but obviously some would be trickier than others. There are some damn small // fiddly ribbon cables in the D70, I should imagine that anything "smaller" would have smaller cables etc. to boot - and of course a smaller sensor. Muchos fiddliness! But if you're good with a spanner...

I think some cameras have the hot filter fused in some way to the sensor... That would be the most major problem. The D70 is easy, it just has four retaining screws holding in two retaining plates over the hot filter (which coincidentally, are one of the scarily many parts I decided didn't really need re-installing. I'm streamlining here!) after that the hot filter just lifts right off :)

A few more test images. I'm getting considerable front-focus, and although my lenses have IR focusing marks, theyre calibrated for 87 or perhaps 87C filters (I'm using an 89B at the mo'). Biggest problem here is that I can't stop down to help compensate, lest all the crud in there shows up! :bonk:

So still lots of problems, and lots of ironing to do - but it's all good fun, and there's something a bit special about shooting with a camera that you have, in part, worked on.
 
Nice one Hoodi. Glad to see someone with the balls to do that :) I've been umming and arring about buying a second body to do this to but it's the 'unsolder this connection' steps that scare me off! Guess I could just get in some practise in! :thumbs:

Righty, having examined my entire stock of polyester filters, they've all got micro-scratches on them (except for possibly one corner of one of my 87's..).

Bearing in mind that these filters are pretty gosh darn thin, can anyone think of any [readily available] chemical I might be able to use to work out some scratches?
Also, where can I get me some disposable lint-free lens wipes :thinking:
 
Your best bet for lint free lens (sensor ;)) pads is PecPads that are distributed in the UK by WarehouseExpress.com - as for chemicals.... not my area, honest guv
 
Not made any further modifications yet (lack of time :() but here are a few more test images.
Really struggling with focus, which seems far more inconsistent than when shooting with hot filter + IR filter. how close AF is to the mark varies with focal length and focusing distance - I really need to clean up my internals as best I can so that I can stop down more!
