Hi guys,

I have a laptop that I have just set up for windows 7 and all the drivers installed fine except the wireless drivers which won't start as they won't recognise the OS. I also can't install the drivers from the device manager (which is how I did the others).

Does anyone have any thoughts on a way to do this, I have a suspicion I will need to set an AP up in the room though as I think the wireless may be damaged

Try using Vista drivers.

the GA date for Win 7 is 2 months away, even though it's on MSDN now for test & dev, so not all manufacturers will have updated their sites yet, particularly with drivers for legacy hardware support.

Even the likes of HP and Dell are only supplying updated drivers for a small footprint of their hardware, so you can buy a new laptop from them instead...

some of the mainstream ones have, its worth a try at least. if only to get the vista driver in the meantime.

hmmm, the annoying bit is to install the vista drivers you need the dll's from the xp drivers

and you can only install the xp drivers on xp :bang:

I hate you sony

good shout alistair - playing with that now

erm right now unknown network controller in device manager, I think its an intel chip though

right still getting that issue with the compatability mode as I don't think it tells enough lies, hunting through its more advanced options now

What is the laptop? Product names, part numbers etc.

Hopefully you can find out what the actual wireless part is and get some Vista drivers from the source, as it won't be a Sony manufactured part in all likelihood, probably someone like Atheros or something.

Do a search on eBay for a wireless card for your laptop and make a note of the model numbers that come up, then search for drivers for it. I managed that way on an ancient acer laptop.

its a sony vaio vgn-tx1hp
i think the wireless card is an intel one, I remember the xp utilities

interestingly I am having one of the same issues I had on xp now limited access to the network, I'm using a usb wifi adapter to experiment (in case the built in one got busted when it fell). Only one network in range atm - will try some ad hoc stuff with my other lappy and experiment
