Hi, I have made a search for this, but cannot find anything, although i think i may have asked this question along time ago ..

When saving 2 - 3 jpgs from raw in photoshop, mainly for HDR use, i find there is also a XMP file saved, its no use i beleive so is there anyway of stopping this from happening...

The XMP file is the metadata associated with the raw file, the best way to stop this is to convert your raw files to DNG, that way the metadata is stored within the file, you also have the added bonus of a smaller filesize, with no loss of quality.

Very helpfull,Thanks ,How does one convert these raw files, can it be done as a default or individually, or perhaps in camera settings.

There is an option in preferences not to create xmp files. So this is the best way to not create them in the first place.

The xmp file contains the edits that you have made to the RAW. Like, for example, all the dust spots you may have removed. Then all the other changes. Delete the xmp (or don't create one) and at some point in your Lightroom installation's career, you will lose this info e.g a new Lightroom installation, no catalogue saved or lost, and you will be back to square one with your RAWs.

Renaming a RAW also means renaming the xmp, and keeping them together. You will soon see the convenience of converting to DNGs. Edited RAWs with xmps will convert in to edited DNGs, if you have any still. The standalone Adobe DNG converter works quicker than letting Lightroom convert them.
 
Or you could do what I do, and have a seperate folder where you store all the XMP files.
Just cut and paste them into the XMP folder.
 
This is interesting... I've never used DNG files. Just tried saving some CR2 (raw) files through ACR plugin for CS3 and I get an option to embed the original raw. This creates a mammoth file size (+80% bigger), and I can't see any difference in what I see on screen between this and a bog standard DNG which seems to save me about 15-20% on file size.
 
It is simple in Lightroom, selecct the files and choose convert to DNG. Or you could use the Adobe DNG convertor, it's free!

I don't embed the original files, becasue that makes the same file size as storing the raw and the DNG.

I don't seem to be able to find anything in Preference.. i'm using CS2..

However i am going to see what happens when i rename the RAW files...

Sorry....didn't read your first post properly. The disable xmp creation is in Lightroom preferences. I don't think PS has this option.
