Hmmmmm, just been quoted £234 for a new xenon headlight bulb ( not fitted!) from the dealers for a friends 2008 Mini Cooper. :eek:


Can I change these myself without :- a) killing myself

and b) not paying an arm and a leg?

Punching xenon headlight bulb 2008 Mini Cooper into Amazon gives some results that are way cheaper than those you were quoted: LINK

Also check out Halfrods they do Xenon bulbs from around £20 and will even fit them for you for another £9
 
By the looks of it, they're trying to sell you the entire headlight assembly; that's around what they seem to be going for.
 
So your surprised by going to a main BMW dealer and getting absolutely reamed?

No, that is just the bulb!!!! :eek:

The headlight unit is £590 ...... and I didn't ask if that included the bulb! :D

I just like to know what they charge so I know how much they will not be getting from me!

Thanks Keith, Halfords are £59.99 for the bulb plus £8 to fit it.
 
Worth looking on eurocarparts for one as well and there are a few good headlight only sites around. I have used powerbulbs.

If it's the bi-xenon it's basically a HID so it's not an ordinary bulb. You don't want cheap ones as they're rubbish and don't work properly.
 
HIDs are very expensive and very fragile, used to have them as dive lights

Indeed, decent HID bulbs cost. Mine were £115 for Phillips ones.I had fitted ebay ones with ebay ballasts as a temporary measure when I got my car for some £40 total, they died within a few months. Had to fork out over a grand to get it back on factory items all in all but so worth it, there is actually light!

To be fair, looking at the age of that car 2008 HID was the only real option at that time to go beyond conventional headlight tech.
Once LED had established itself modern cars moved to that.
As divers some of us embraced the HID bulbs as they gave a much more white light compared to halogen tech but were very fragile.
People that dived with them were terrified of the slightest nudge and they would pop.

Once LED came along divers moved very fast to that tech and I own two very powerfull LED dive lights for night diving.

I suspect that model he has is only HID compatible.
 
the bulbs are very expensive but you can get cheap ones on ebay which work fine.

i changed them on my R32 for about a tenner off ebay, very easy to do. (never had any issues with them either)
