XE-1 v GX7 v OMD EM10

Hello all

Be grateful for views on the above cameras - I've read reviews on all and I'm confident that they are all good cameras but I just can't narrow it down.

Budget is tight so the XE-1 would be the cheapest (2nd hand and with the 16-50 lens) but adding lenses after that becomes a very expensive business indeed.

The GX7 and OMD EM10 bodies are more expensive but use the same lenses which can be picked up a lot cheaper - really like the thought of using the 14 and 20mm primes on these,

I'm getting to the stage where I'm annoying myself - can anyone give some good advice ?

I'd prefer to spend under £500 but could go a bit higher - XE1 can be got second hand with 16-50 for under £400

New Gx7 body is £380 and the olympus £550 if you go grey !
 
I've had a play with the em10 today side by side with the em5 and imo it's improved and you can tell it's the newer model.

Just something about Fuji files that appeal to me but as you say, additional lenses can be costly. But, depends which lenses you want.
 
I just like picking up interesting well priced lenses - all the fuji lenses are expensive !
 
If you need AF, the x-e1 can be a bit of a pain! It is accurate but pedestrian. The micro four thirds are faster in that respect and come with more budget lens options. But of course the Fuji will give you shallower depth of field with the bigger sensor and fast lenses.

If it were me, I'd go for the em10.
 
Well I don't take action photos.....

But I do use A/F 99% of the time

why the em10 over the GX7 ?

It's non existent IMVHO and just not a real world issue to the point that I've never noticed it.

I went for the GX7 mostly for the small form factor and the 1/8000 max shutter speed as I like shooting with wide aperture lenses even in good light and a max shutter speed of 1/4000 often means using smaller apertures to keep the shutter speed under 1/4000 or using ND's. If going for a camera in this class 1/8000 is pretty rare, not an issue though if you want to shoot your f1.4 lenses at f8 all day.

Oly cameras may well produce better straight out of the camera JPEG's but I shoot raw and have done for years so JPEG's are just not a factor for me.

I've read good things about the Panasonic G6, might be worth adding to the list of possibilities especially if you can find a bargain.

that happens to me alot..

have you been out and physically handled them? I have ha d3 Fujis now(XPro1, X20 & X-F1) and not got on with any of them although I appreciated they are great and well respected but it shows how we are different.. on the flipside to that I adore my Oly's(EM5 & EPL5) they seem atuned to my way of thinking and I have never enjoyed jpgs SOOC so much. I had a Panasonic G3 for a few weeks and seeing as it is MFT like the Olys I just couldn't gel with it, again though great camera.

so my advice is you have to go and cop a feel, I cannot say any of your considerations are better/worse than each other all cameras have their niggles, its just about which ones can you live with and thats where getting a physical hold of them will help.

I'm sure there are some G6 owners here so maybe they'll give some feedback if they look in here or maybe you could post a request for feedback in the Panasonic owners thread.
 
On the subject of video quality, while the E-m10 does have the stabilizer, the actual video quality and video options are much better on the GX7. Fuji video is terrible.
 
Video quality doesn't concern me - I honestly wouldn't care if I bought a camera without a video mode !

I have both the G6 and GX7, and the GX7 has the better IQ. The difference isn't huge, but the gap does widen as you increase ISO. To be honest, I don't think that IQ between the G6 and GX7 should be your main criteria in choosing between these cameras - form factor and functionality should be. Of course, both of these are very personal things.

The G6 is probably the best handling camera I've ever owned. It fits my hand perfectly, and everything I need access to in general day to day shooting just falls to hand. I can adjust pretty much everything without taking the camera from my eye.

The GX7 is better built and (to my eye) looks gorgeous, but loses out ergonomically to the G6. I think the main reason is the rangefinder styling, which I'm still adjusting to having never used this layout of camera before. Focus peaking is improved on the GX7, so if using old manual lenses interests you, then this might be the way to go.

Honestly, there's not a massive difference in IQ between them (although the GX7 edges it), so it would come down IMHO to a choice between the two different styles / designs and your personal preference.

One thing that the GX7 doesn't have that I wish it did have is a fully articulated screen that can be turned to the body. It's a wonderful feature on the mini SLR style cameras IMVHO.

Thanks folks - went for an OMD EM10 in the end and have a 12-32 lens on the way :)
