XBOX LIVE

Correct. You can play games online for free in PS3 chatrooms. You need to have an XBOX LIVE account in order to play games with an XBox.

and let the fanboy flamewars begin

It's about £30 for 12 months if you get it off Ebay Matt (get an emailed code, it's fine).

I had the old style one, and the signal used to drop off if I tried to play upstairs, so mebbe try the newer 2 ariel one, or hardwire it if you can?? I now use home plugs which allow you to use the electricity cables in your house as an ethernet network - they are definitely worth a £35 investment, when you consider that an official xbox wireless bridge is more expensive than that??

Yep, buy some home plugs, and a subscription to Xbox live, and it'll probably cost the same as a bridge, but with none of the problems!!

...or get a wireless bridge. I've used http://www.live-codes.com before for the Live! subscription. Good prices - you can get cheaper (e.g. gamingmall.com) but I have no experience of any others.

fixed that for you matt..:D

Hmm not sure about the wireless requirement, I have one up in Newcastle (where I live) with wireless and one down here in Basingstoke (where I work) that has an ethernet lead going straight to the router.

However as said before, you do need to pay for it (XBOX LIVE) that can range anything from 24 quid from 39.99.

Always a good idea to keep an idea on hotukdeals as you often to get someone selling it cheap like zavvi now and again.

There are some FREE subscriptions to XBox Gold depending on what hardware you are buying for the XBox. I *think* we were offered a free sub to XBox Silver - couldnt tell you how long the sub was for [this was included in the box for our XBox Elite] but heard lots of reviews and feedback about Gold and went with the Gold package instead.

I bought the XBox wireless adapter and it included a 1 month gold subscription to XBox Live for 1 month - FREE! We are using that before we use the 3 month sub someone bought for my son.

Why do Xbox charge when Playstation don't? Xbox must lose a lot of potential buyers because of that?

Because Microsoft actually put out a decent online service. I have both a PS3, and 360. And the 360's online play is a hell of a lot better than PS3's.

Although Multiplayer is the best on the PC.

how is it better when you are actually playing a game?

I dont talk to other players anyway cos most of the noise that comes out of the speaker is stupid idiot people or kids.

Weve got a 360 and a ps3 in the house and the 360 online experience is far better in my view.
With the 360 connections your always better hardwiring it directly into the router, but that's not always possible and its annoying having to rig the cable up all the time. The wireless adapter usually works ok depending on how far the 360 is away from the router etc etc.

Hence my suggestion of homeplugs!! Wireless networks are too unreliable these days - if I check the wireless connections in my street, every single channel is covered by a router on the street. For £35, you get a stable ethernet connection, no lag, decent pings etc I find myself hosting a lot more games on Xbox live since I switched from wireless to the home plugs, and I still have the freedom to move the plug from the study to the bedroom should I choose to game in there. I also have my upstairs PC hooked up to a plug too!!

Just been checkin em out.
So you plug the router into one of these homeplugs (which is in a socket) and the Xbox into another????

Can you run your normal wireless network at the same time????

Whats the difference between the 2 online systems then? I mean surely the game online is the game online? Regardless of whether its playstation or xbox hosting?

Also those home plugs sound good.. but I've also heard issues that you get interference/ dramatically slowed internet if the electric use in the house is high.
We decided to buy a load of cable from PC world and hard wire the whole house.

Yep, you run a cable from the router back into the plug socket/home plug and run another cable out from the home plug at the other end into your PS3/Xbox/PC. The wireless network still works fine (or badly in our house, thanks to the rest of the street!!)

I've had no problems with the plugs, but it's worth checking them out first - the website I suggested allows you to send them back if they don't work for you. My signal upstairs is running at about 85% which means I only get about 7Mb of my 12Mb connection, but it's stable and still fast enough for HD streaming. Obviously, recabling the house will be much better.

Hosting the game tends to mean it's less laggy at your end, and can give you a slight advantage in FPS games like COD!

I think the difference is that with the Xbox Live system, you pay money, so convince yourself that its better...or its the Kool Aid that MS have been serving up for years...

A friend of mine just used these guys successfully for a cheap Live! subscription: http://cheapxboxlivecodes.com/.

Not sure if it's true, but I have head mention that Sony might start charging for their onine service too soon...

I have both, a PS3 and a 360. Xbox Live is much more refined and is a much better user experience than PSN. Probably because it's more mature than PSN, but also because it benefits from much more investment than PSN (because it's not free).

PSN is by no means bad, but it's just not as intuitive and doesn't offer as much to the user as Xbox Live.

I had a PS2 and an original xbox and in terms of games the PS2 was better than the xbox in every department. However, MS seem to have cracked the market this time and I have to say, gaming on the 360 is far superior to gaming on the ps3.

The PS3 does win hands down though in the home entertainment area. Bluray is great, and it has BBC Iplayer. Except for Sky Player, can you get that on ps3?

The difference is one is better than the other.

If you compare it to camera's, people might say what's the difference and you reply that "this one takes a better picture than that one." But they both take a picture, right? And for some people who rarely use it, the lesser quality camera might be fine.

LIVE does better online gaming than PSN. The friends system is better, matchmaking is better, teamplay is better, alerting is better, it's just far more integrated into the system than PSN is into the ps3.

i disagree with that. I play MW2 online, a friend comes on, sends me a message to play, i can join his game, its fast, it works. PSN has a shop, video downloads, PS Home. You can talk to your mates should you want to, the only thing you cant do is cross game chat

MS have had a good few years of fine-tuning Live, but then if you pay for it, you expect it to be better, even if functionally its not really any different.

Obviously I can only give my opinion, but as an owner of both my opinion is that Live is superior in every single way bar one. PSN allows you to purchase directly with cash.

but why is it superior? what makes it better? Ive used online with both systems and tbh i dont really see how its any better, maybe i need prolonged use to really understand it?

It's more robust and better integrated into the games. I've played various games on PSN (I'll use PES2010 for example). It doesn't alert you when someone asks you to join a game, you cant accept game invites without loading up the game first and going into the game menus. It doesn't allow cross game chat with mates (a MASSIVELY used feature on Live), it's not as solid as Live (lag etc can be horrid on psn). Achievements blow trophies out of the water too. It's probably not as bad on games like COD because I'm sure Sony and the COD devs spend a lot of time ensuring that there'll be no issues, but Live is seriously streets ahead in terms of enjoyment. Better sense of community as well, possibly because 9/10 people on psn don't have a headset (btw - the "all headsets on live are yappy 10 year olds etc" - myth).

It's free, so you can't really complain, but it's definitely a case of you get what you pay for in online gaming.

These days I only buy a game for my ps3 if it isn't coming out on xbox.

As many have stated, hard-wire where you can. I reconfigured an old WRT54G using DD-WRT that I had lying around to a range expander, and can plug my xbox right into that downstairs (primary router is upstairs).
I've run Cat5e throughout the upstairs, but will have to wait to do downstairs until it needs decorating again!

Completely off topic but just sprang to mind regarding the re-wiring, I fitted a wall mounted television and used these guys (EuroNetwork) to fit some nice wall plates instead of having trailing cables.

Thanks for that info - I have an old WRT54G that might come in rather handy now!
