Its all subjective of course but apart from the Stones and Elvis none of the above broke new ground in my opinion

All great bands of course

And I would add two others - the Beach Boys and Radiohead :)

fascinating...

"We Will Rock You" has accumulated more than 3 million U.S. radio and TV feature performances from 1977 through the first quarter of 2009. BMI calculates that one million performances of a song (averaging three minutes in length) represents 5.7 years of continuous airplay. Using this formula, the U.S. radio and TV performances of "We Will Rock You" equal more than 18 years of continuous airplay.

We will rock you played for 18 years

They may be over-rated in some peoples opinions - but very little songs will ever go near that record.

The passage of time seems to be healing my attitude to Queen, since their overexposure during my yoof. The YouTube vid of the Border Terrier belting along to Don't Stop Me Now started it, and Renaissance Man Brian May's activities (including A Village Lost And Found) is helping to heal the rift. Give me another 30 years and I may give U 2 a hearing.

Getting back to the X-Factor and some of the major bands mentioned in this thread.

Music history is full of huge acts and iconic individuals who to be honest aren't the best musicians or particularly great singers. Some probably wouldn't get through an audition. Remember the kit-kat advert.

X-Factor contestants have no previous history or musical landmark moments to hang their hats on. They have not 'made it' through relentless gigging, incredible songwriting, on stage shock tactics, or as founders of a 'genre'. They're a product and all they can do is perform and be judged on their vocal ability.

As for Queen - they did have a very strong vocalist who was a great frontman.

Didn't queen overtake the Beatles recently as the most successful band ever?

To give Queen songs to a bunch of hopefuls is only ever going to prove disappointing. Queen have four decades of experience, Freddy Mercury was an outstanding performer. How can they compete? Stacey and the twins were the only acts that were entertaining on Saturday IMO.

Like it or not, whatever the 'X-factor' is, the twins have got. I don't particularly like them, but I can see that they've got massive entertainment value, and I'm willing to sacrifice a bit of quality for a bit of entertainment. The press will ridicule them but they'll feed off it and be very successful. The names Ant and Dec spring to mind.

One of the most eye opening moments was the tribute concert where all the established acts / singers performed a Queen song with the remaining members of the band.

It was obviously a large outdoor hectic concert with lots of technical issues but from a live vocal point of view I remember the stand-out moment and perhaps the only one up to 'doing Freddy' was George Michael performing 'Somebody to Love'.

Comments.........here goes gulp...

Elvis was launched (if that’s the right word) through a musical talent show and much like Simon from X-Factor – RCA pushed him for all he was worth. Take nothing away from the man - He grew up understanding blue grass but his image was pretty much pimped from TV show to TV show and thrown through the casino scene. Much was made of his military service in the late 50’s as it was pretty obvious he was not only a manufactured all American Star but a political tool. The films obviously followed and the rest is history.

Col Parker paid loads to songwriters for giving credit to Elvis for writing songs in return for dosh.

As a guitarist (rhythm at best) he was average and on stage would often appear to be playing what he wasn’t.

Elvis was the untimate 'Pop Idol' but came before we all knew about live TV and how or why they were made. The years pass and we have a legend - which of course he was.

Was he talented – of course he was. He could sing and he could dance !

You say he's better than The Beatles.......

I don't really like the Beatles after saying all that but who is best............?

.............The Beatles without doubt

............BUT there's 5 or 6 Elvis songs which I really love and at the end of the day what i like most about those songs are the way Elvis sings them so I guess the Simons of this world know what they're doing..
