Admin Note : This *is* a scam...please see [jump=post10]post #10[/jump] onwards

Hi Guys,

I came across some information in a Singaporean photography forum about a camera supplier in UK that might be a scam.

I checked the site, its prices were too good to be true and there were many aspects which caused me to be suspicious. Using the Trading Standards website I checked upon on the company and found that its domain had only been registered/updated about 10 days ago. As much as I'd like some cheap equipment I'll give this company a miss.

I don't dare quote the company name here for legal reasons, and I don't want to give the website URL in case someone can't resist the very low prices and loses their money.

Here is one report about the business.

Sorry to be a bit vague but I don't want a visit by a company lawyer or a couple of ugly heavies.

Pete

If its too good to be true , it probably is

www.cendice.co.uk DONT BUY FROM THESE PEOPLE WITHOUT CHECKING THEIR LEGITIMACY FIRST

There, I've said it for you, if there's legal action, they can sue me lol. (Although you posted a similar post on another forum and you actually mentioned the name there....so why not here? ;))

Anyway, it does sound too good to be true.
A UK retailer, which supposedly has brances all over the country....with a website that defaults to Euros?
Also the prices look too good to be true.
They claim to have two branches in Manchester. In both places I'm pretty sure there isn't a 'Cendice' store.....99% certain infact.
Their local branches don't have phone numbers.
Their main address also returns on google as a printers, a photographers, an accountant. etc

Doesn't seem legit to me.

They also say collect in store is available. So far I have put 20 things into a basket and not one of them is available for collection.

has anyone actually tried visiting one of their stores they have listed? I live in Northamptonshire, so the nearest one to me is about an hour away. So i'm not going on a whim. It would be interesting to know if the store prices reflect the web prices, and whether the stores actually carry stock!

I agree it looks very suspicious, but that is the best looking scam site I have ever seen, normally they are a lot more obvious. Quite worrying really...

[ANCHOR=post10]It's a scam.[/ANCHOR] They even list the telephone number in a non conventional way, I haven't seen any genuine retailer display their phone number as xxxx-xxxxxxx

Take a step back and think of the top 25 items that are sold on the internet as scams. The top 25 products that will get the top hit rate.

Then look at what they sell.

The website was registered only recently, yet theyve been trading for 20 years?
Surely if they had been trading that long off the net, someone will have heard of them.
Also look at their site :

* Copyright 2001-2008
* A link that says "Web site use agreement Purchase"...Lovely English there!
* The use the term "Shipping and Handling" which is most definitely NOT a UK term
* They also refer to returning things by mail. Never post.

I think what they may have done (if it's a scam) is gotten the details from a dormant company and used their name and company number to try and give an air of legitimacy?

Also, this thread over at aa419 suggests it's a scam, and recycles known designs of other scams, yet at the checkout offer a valid SSL certificate.

PS. I've edited your thread title to allow others to search for the store so more people can be aware. :)

Also

192.com has this as a listing :

Does *this* website look familiar?
They've completely ripped off the legitimate website of www.futureshop.ca.

It also appears that their head office is run by manikins :p - For the past 10 minutes no one has moved (Yes i refreshed) including the guy at the very back standing near a pole :p

Regards, James

The office webcam had people in there before, moving about. However, I have a feeling that theyve stolen another company's feed and put it on their website. (I dont think futureshop have a webcam feed).

God sceptics eh:)

Isn't it obvious, there is a Black Hole in each office and all the people are just going over the event horizon causing an apparent slowdown (from our perspective) in the space time continuum.

If I'm wrong then they are just a bunch of scammy bar stewards:)

See in the first pic he has now left his desk and in the third the bloke walking away has gone.

The people in the 2nd cam are further over the horizon, thus slower:)

or they just swap the photos hmmm?

I'm sure a warning about this outfit was posted a few months back.

It's not loading now.
Looks like my emails may have done the trick ;)

Can't agree with the well done comment.

The suspected site should have been reported to Trading Standards immediately. The people who ran this site have now packed up their scam, more than likely without being caught.

In a couple of weeks they will open up another web scam where they will probably rip off innocent people, especially with the run up to Christmas. Had Trading Standards been alerted there is a chance they would have prosecuted.

By all means alert people on the forum to it but to take the law into your own hands and try to deal with them yourselves hasn't really done anyone any favours.

I appologise in advance if you did report the site to Trading Standards

Hi Guys,

At 08:42 hrs this morning cendice.co.uk was on-line again.

Perhaps Quaker will sort it out his way this time.

I thank those who highlighted the fact that this site may be a scam therefore I wont use it.

Cheers

P.S. However Pete, just for you I will send Trading Standards an email highlighting the site. It wont take me two minutes ;-)

phoneline disabled (yak account or something)

All items disappeared from view.

Some of the addresses are Manchester Fort, white City also Manchester, I think that these are Maplin's shops.

There some clever barstewards out there.

String 'em and let's have a Simpsons type mob run the streets

Back online today with a different phone number, just an answer phone.

Bigger discounts today.

The nerve of some folk.

I just rang the 'Central office' number. I got a message this account has been disabled.

I've had a reply from Future Shop (Theirs is the website code theyve nicked). Theyve passed it onto their IT team to look into.

It could be a website template that anyone can use. Dreamweaver has loads of free templates available.

I have contacted Trading Standards office who told me that no-one had made any complaint to them regarding said website and until anyone does they are not deemed to be upsetting anyone or ripping anyone off.

They did agree the store in Manchester seemed strange and if they receive any complaints they will investigate.

What I have read on this thread is people guessing something is wrong and I'm afraid Trading Standards are right, unless anyone specifically complains about being ripped off, this company is doing nothing wrong.

In my opinion, it does look dodgy and therefore I would never use it. But thats all it is at the moment, a dodgy looking website.

It's not a template, they've completely stolen the content and mass changed key words (like the company name).

Just look for the history of Future Shop, theyve even copied that, pretty much word for word. It's not just dodgy looking, it's evidently a complete scam.

isn't that stupid!

An obvious scam but unless anybody is ripped off they ignore it.

:suspect:

just imagine entering your credit card details..they would have a field day even before you became concerned about your purchase not turning up.

Just been to the Fort in Manchester no shop there by that name
Bob

I'm confused Quaker.

In your first post, you indicate that we (the collective we in this thread) hadn't done enough because we hadn't reported this scam to trading standards, and you seemed annoyed that they will have gotten away with it.
Now you seem to be defending them saying it's not a scam until theyve defrauded someone, because someone at trading standards said so?

Your tone seems to have completely changed to one of 'theyve not actually done anything wrong'.

If I stood outside your house with a pair of ladders, a crowbar, a balaclava, a stripey jumper and a bag marked swag...I'm sure the police would have something to say about it...Even though it's perfectly legal to do so ;)

I first indicated that the correct way to deal with it was to report the site to Trading Standards. ( I did, did you?)

The reply I got was that they had not received any complaints from anyone being ripped off, therefore they could not investigate it. Now I cant prove this company are dogdy because I haven't purchased anything from them.

I am not defending anyone and I find it offensive that you think I am, I am just stating a fact. If you have bought something from them and they have ripped you off then they have done something wrong. Anyone can have a website, and say on it what they want providing it isnt offensive to anyone. Its the same with this website. I may not agree with what the Trading Standards said but legally its on the nail.

I would never in a million years use that web site. Some people will and if they get ripped off thats when TS steps in.

If you stood outside my house as you described yes, the police would have something to say providing someone reported it.

However if I was to step outside and leave an inprint of your crow bar on your forehead, then who do you think the Police would have to arrest?
