Yes
I currently have a canon 350d which is a great camera but on several shoots ive borrowed my long suffering friend Dougs (click here to see the man yourself and his work) Nikon D60.

I find it so much better to fly around the menus and adjust them - not that i know what im doing yet

IF i was to put mine up for swap do i have a hope in hell as my camera is not used that much and is mint still? In monitry terms am i barking up the wrong tree? can anyone advise me at all as im really quite struggling :( :help:

Many Thanks

Kev

I think it's personal preference with Canon/Nikon.
I also have a 350D, and my friend has a D70. I've tried using his D70 on several occasions, and just can't get the hang of it. If I put the same settings in as I would my Canon, they just come out wrong? I couldn't get my head around the menu on the Nikon either, whereas I seemed to 'click' into my Canon one almost instantly.

I think the chances of you getting a swap would be minimal, but not unheard of. Question is, how many lenses do you have, etc? Its not just a case of swapping bodies, the kit and kaboodle has to go with it. If its not many then now might be the time to go for it if its really what you want to do, but be very sure you want to go to the expence of the leap. Perhaps get in touch with a reputable dealer and see what a trade in would work out at. Canon/Nikon really is 'horses for courses' ......oh, except you get cookies with Nikons ;),

Don't get involved in swapping back and forth too much! Over the years I've spent what it cost to put men on the moon doing so. If you've got any number of Canon lenses then try other canon bodies first to see how you get on. If not then try other nikon sony etc bodies (including the upgrade path) so that if you do swap you KNOW you will be happy with whichever make you go to.

A straight swap....i doubt it :shake:
d40 with kit lens £175
d50 with 18-200 £350
d80 with 18-135 £420

Canon 350 body...you'd get around £150

If you find the menu system much easier then invest in the Nikon, although if its that your friend gets better pictures make sure its his camera and not him:thinking:

Well the D60 is a lovely little camera, and its one of my favourite Nikon bodies of all time (and this is coming from a former D700 owner)

However if you are diving into menus all the time, this suggests a certain lack of confidence in yourself and what you are doing.

Some why not read the manual, do a bit of research, practice a bit with what you've got?

While I personally thing that the Nikon system is generally superior to Canon in ergonomics and handing... menu adjustment issues would be WAY down on my reasons to switch.

Can I ask if you prefer the Nikon why did you buy the Canon?

The choice of Canon v Nikon ( or Pentax or Olympus or Sony) is a very personal thing. OK you now think that a Nikon is the camera for you, but I would suggest you stop and take a minute or so to decide what you want to do.

You say you find it easier to fly around the menu's and adjust them. Well to be honest once you've set the camera up I wouldn't have thought you need to use the menu's that much anyway. The one I tend to use a lot is the Format option. Apart from that not much else.

However if its an ergonomic problem, the Nikon feels better to your way of working then I can understand that. I prefer the feel of Canon cameras. They just work for me. Maybe it's the same for you but with Nikon.

Provided you've not made an investment is accessories or lenses, changing manufacturers isn't going to be that difficult. However a swop I think is not goingt o happen, mainly due to the residual price difference of the 2 cameras.

Trawl some of the secondhand dealers and see if you can come up with a deal you can live with. However money will have to change hands at some stage.

I think when you first buy a camera and start investing in lenses etc... you probably dont know the route you may go down when you get a bit more experienced.

Most uninitiated people probably feel the 2 cameras in their hands and thats about it, as they dont know enough about all the other things to look much further. Its only when they get more experienced that they realise it can't do certain things they wanted it to do, or the menus work better for them etc etc.

I, for instance had no idea that the Canon wouldnt fire an external speedlite off-camera via the onboard flash from the camera. Nikons flash system seems far superior.

Like others have said..

If it's the menu system you are having problems with then read the manual and then read it again and practice. I've had my 50D for just over a month and to be honest I very rarely have to go into the menu apart from formatting my CF card (and this is my first DSLR).

If it's the handling of the camera and you don't have money to throw at another camera would it not be better for you to try and get use to what you've got. Use it a lot and see if you can get to like it.

Well that's my tuppence worth :D

I have a 40D and I'd happily upgrade to a D300 of the nikon family or a D700.
as it happens I'll stick with canon as I have a few lenses now. if I win a lottery then there is always the 5D mkii to look forward to

suppose it might just be as im new to all this and not given my camera a good outing with assistance :(

its not that he is getting pictures - as i personally feel i get good pictures its just the settings side of things i struggle with.

TBH i think the bold text has hit the nail on the head :'( ive just bought a book to day and im going to see what i can get from this.

i broke the goldern rule - didnt try before i buy in honesty.

i think its my in experienced nature thats letting it down

Sounds perfectly normal to me!
have a nikon then

thank you folks for all your comments

Whilst I would agree Nikkon's menu system is more intuitive and the ergonomics better, thats probably way down the list of reasons to swap...

I'd wait til you find something Canon can't do...

But you'd find something like the 40D or 50D a fair bit different to your 350D... in many ways!

If you get a chance, try one of the xxD Canon bodies (the 30D is an older model but is great! The 40D is a newer model and has some extra bells and whistles but, will be more expensive).

IMO ANYof the xxD Canon bodies has a much more user friendly control system.

For me my choice was all about feel in my hand... at the time when I made my decission my old pentax MZ5n had given up the ghost and I decided to get an upgraded camera as I was doing more photography and looked on it as a major decission to pick canon or nikon... knowing this would be a lifetime choice due to the purchase of lenses... It was a film camera I was going for as at the time... about 1999 or 2001... I cant remeber... Anyway after loads of deliberation I decided on Nikon... however... as soon as I picked up the nikon for the first time vs the canon I just hated the feel of it and the canon felt right... Its a personal choice ... nothing you decide will be wrong if you are happy... I dont think anyone can make or help you with this one... sounds like its nikon for you...

Ive now went for an EOS5 which is fab... and was so simple to pick up as so similar to my EOS3... It amazed me how fast digital took over... but im glad I waited because at the time I could have never afforded the EOS5 spec in digital.
