Wraps-Why??

OK, I keep seeing these self adhesive equipment wraps, is this a solution to a problem that never existed or are they genuinely useful?

If my gears in it's proper camera bag then why would I need another protective layer?
 
I don't use them but I have noticed the occasional moan in a sales listing about a mark on the camera (etc) being sold being caused by a bag zip or similar.
Personally if I were to use one it would be the silicone 'glove' type and not the stick-on type, which IMO devalues a camera visually.
I use a neoprene lens cover for my little Leica Q lens hood as they seem more vulnerable to marks.

Edited as saw your update as yes I read it as the skin wraps due to the self adhesive.

My view on skin wraps:
When I had my Sony A7iii with Sony 200-600mm attached it rubbed against me on the zoo one day, and caused significant paint rub just on one day. Hence I have used such wraps since. Can get them fairly cheaply from places like Aliexpress. It means if you ever want to sell a lens or camera, they look like brand new once you take the wrap off. Therefore they generally more than pay for themselves.

My view on the cloth wraps that you've confirmed you are referring to:
I agree. I think may only be useful if you some reason you aren't using a proper camera bag; but obviously still don't provide the same protection as a proper camera bag does.

Yes I've only looked at them because there are times I think that I might take the non camera backpack into town and it would be nice to have the camera an one lens, but then I think what if i need the other lens? or filter or..... or...or... so I either bring my proper shoulder bag (Thinktank Retrospective 7) or leave all at home and use the iphone.

I have an osprey for hillwalks and use a small tenba insert which may not be quite big enough for all three lenses plus filters so may buy one for one of the lenses to make better use of space I suppose.

This is my initial impression but there's also a bit of GAS I'm trying to kick LOL.
 
I guess if (like me) your lenses often find themselves in a regular backpack, typically in lens pouches - if/when you get a new lens/device... Until you get a "proper" pouch for it - or to keep a combination together & protected.

That said I only possess a single wrap about 18x24" that currently has 2 flashguns mounted on mini tripods wrapped in it, in my "badger box". That one is for my convenience.
 
I bought some.....

The larger one has my Dell Ultra book in it sitting on a shelf.

The other two smaller ones I found useful when I was packing my gear bag for last year's long haul holiday. My preference for such long flights is to separate body & lens in the camera bag but that needs a cushion layer between the two and a normal bag divider is too thick. So, with each body "wrapped" they fitted snugly. Were I to put the bodies in a drawer, the wrap would protect them.
