I've been finding recently that photos on Flickr look quite a bit better than they do on the Forum, and I didn't see it all being down to the resolution. I've been viewing TP on Dusk as I found it better for reading posts, but Night mode is way closer to the Flickr background for viewing photos and really improves that experience for me. I'm just not so sure about reading white type on the Night background, so I'll need to see how that goes. I checked out the info at the Resources tab (who knew?), but I don't think I can set different preferences for photos and text. I'm guessing that The Management can tell us how many folks have selected the different backgrounds, but I'm just wondering if any of you have specific reasons for your choice?

Thanks, Peter

I'm a night user, for the last couple of months it's easier on the eye and frankly allows me to more confident on commenting on the exposure of an image...the only time using it is when some smart arse starts using anything other than the default text colour  :banghead:

I'm a dusk user. I find night just too hard to read the text, but I do understand what you're saying about black as a background for images. I have my websites that way.

RE color of Print on Background, if using Mozilla FireFox or a Derivative load up an extension called "No Squint" this will allow you to change Text or Background Colour to make it readable (on a Site or Global Basis), FireFox link below. Also I believe on Chrome but not sure about IE.

Thanks for this Lennard. I've downloaded it and am now viewing black type on a mid-grey background, but I'm not sure I'll stick with it longterm. It does mean that colour photos now almost jump off the page, so that's interesting.:)

Night is the best for image viewing without a doubt.

The normal white one is just so **** it defies belief that it's actually the default skin. I hope it was no one at TP who decided that... if so, they should damned well know better.

I didn't even know you could change it. I've set mine to night, a lot nicer for me.

Night and default are absolute no go for me, the white on default is ok, I don't mind that [I don't have any of my monitors set to retinal burn levels which probably helps ] but the blue trim makes my corneas itch! Photos on black I really really dislike, I just DO! So, the evening theme is probably best for viewing pictures imo, but I do find my eyes get very tired very quickly reading the text on that one, so I use Dusk, its just perfect. Pale grey background and a subtle blue trim make it my perfect theme. FWIW, I use a similar grey as Evening in the background on LR and CS, a neutral grey that helps keeps eyes fresh and concentrate on the photo I am working on.

Gosh your a complex lady :P

ehem, I will say it before anyone else does... the relevant word in that sentence is 'Lady' :D You chaps will never get our logic!

Quantum Physics is easier to understand :D

Lady??? ;)

Neither do I. 100 cd/m2 usually. White backgrounds are just pretty useless to judge photographs against. That's why almost all image editing programs use mid grey to dark grey as default backgrounds.

Black for viewing photos, yes. But as a general forum theme? Hell no :-)

But it's a photography forum :) .. it's like... got pictures on it :)

LOL.. quite.

I'm used to the Night theme now. Every other forum just seems blindingly bright if I switch from this to anything else... unless they also have a dark theme.

It's another one of those "to each his own" thingamibobs.
Makes for interesting reading though :-)

Actually I tend to agree, but there is unfortunately far too much waffle lately and not enough photos :(

I pretty much agree with all that,
Although I stick with evening for everything :)

Just for me, oh you charmer you :P

I've disabled the Nosquint add-on and settled on Evening as well. Tonight anyway. (y)
I find it quite easy on the eye's TBH.
It takes the edge off the "brighter ones".
The "black" :shudder:
I really don't like it at all.

Way back when I thought computers might be something I could do as a career [well ok, 10 years ago], I also did a C&G in adult education whilst doing the techs course, the overall plan being to stay on at the as a college lecturer - across the two disciplines we were taught that pale text on a black background is also far better for people with serious vision impairment, the contrast is easier to see. I would love to know if that is still the general consensus or if later research into it has shown any other combinations to be better? Asking you David because it is something you might come across in your working life, whereas I decided to move to London instead and only ever taught for one term  [don't ask]

The consensus for printed material seems to be a normal black on white or black on yellow for visually impaired.. with large sans serif fonts. For screen use the opposite is recommended, with large, white or yellow high contrast sans serif fonts against a black background. Screen applications designed for the visually impaired are never attractive for anyone else I'm afraid, but "night" would most closely fit the requirements. This has been the case for many years now with use of screen based equipment. So much so that Microsoft have three themes in Windows called high contrast1 and high contrast2 and high contrast black, designed for visually impaired people - all use black backgrounds and bright white or yellow fonts.

Dark backgrounds are also the best to view images against, especially those with subtle shadow detail or dark in nature.
