Yes
Just looking for a new short zoom lens, and i was thinking sigma 24-60mm F2.8EX DG, but i was looking for prices and was astounded between the US price, and the UK price.

check this...

US price

UK price

That's over double the price if you get it from UK. About £116 from the US, and £238 from UK..

that's including postage :o

makes me wonder why people say the east is cheaper...

Bear in mind that you might get hit with a cost from Customs and excise.. it is hit and miss and sometimes you get a way with it but not all the time....

Even if you get the package delivered and you think ha got it and no extra cost... wait 2 weeks before you praise yourself for getting away with it.

on a complete other item, i have ordered some business cards from vista print and a t-shirt. it was chepaer ordering it from vistaprint.com in the USA and paying the shipping than it was ordering from the UK...

ridiculous

hmmm...If one was going to be purchasing a couple of nice L lenses it might be worth a nice weekend away, would be bonus points for the missus too!......Just done a google and found a last min flight to New York for £309 return! What your saving on the lens you could have a couple of night away in the Big Apple........then break the news that you've just bought a D3 or 1Ds! :-P

Why don't you try Kerso he buys them from usa ships them over here and sells them to you with a uk invioce (cheaper than buying over here and no worrys about getting hit with customs )

That seller does not list shipping costs to the UK Ant.

On another note - Are warranties effective in uk if bought from US ?

I'm of to the states in November and thinking of buying a canon 100-400mm lens there. Will the warranty still be valid?

Abit of subject here but have you checked goodprint.co.uk, vistaprint were taking money from my account which i didnt know about..

As for prices for lens like stated above you my get stung for import tax unless you email them to ask if they can label it as a gift or value of 50 bucks.

Pounds for Dollars, it's been that way for years on electronics & photography equipment.

Try One Stop Digital, it's from Hong Kong, but they guarantee no import duty and it'll be with you in 5 days.

Even if you paid postage at that price and got caught for Customs and VAT, it would only cost you about £175, a lot cheaper than UK prices, and at least 5 people have made a profit on it!
Just shows how the UK really likes to rip people off! I am surprised they dont charge more if you buy it in peak holiday season, everything else is dearer!

Anyway, if you didnt want to get it from the US, OneStop Digital will deliver it to you for £189.99 with an international warranty. I can recommend them. Look here....

Hi,

try adding one of the Amazon US items to your basket and I'm pretty sure it tells you that you can't buy from them, unless of course it's from one of the Market Sellers and not from Amazon themselves.

If you can have it marked as a gift, or a warranty item of commercial value less than £5 then you'll defacto avoid it.

Hi,

gift only lets you get away with £36 instead of £18, and bear in mind if it is even just a penny over the limit then you get hit with vat ( 17.5% ), plus customs tax of about 4% AND a collection fee of at least £8 and that is all calculated on the cost of the item PLUS the postage costs.

I have heard of items being marked as repair returns to avoid the taxes but this is unconfirmed, marking down an items of great value is risky because if it goes missing or is damaged then you could lose the lot as it will only be insured to the marked value.

Here is my advice, on a lens of the value you are linking to it is simply not worth it, not even close to worth it. Best online UK price via Camerapricebuster is £207.94 and I have no doubt you could find it cheaper still if you hunt around, took me less than 10 secs to knock £30 off your quoted price.

I have looked into this on several occasions as my wife buys gems from all over the world to make jewellery. Also the jewelllery making tools are cheaper it the states!

Basically (as was said earlier) if you buy an item under £18 they do not harrass you for import duty or VAT AND if it is marked as a gift this figure increases to £36

If an item is marked as a warranty return then they will require the stamped proof of postage OUT of the country! There is a specific form for this which you get your carrier/post office to stamp THEN when it comes back customs hold the item until you send them the paperwork OR you pay the import duty/vat/admin costs and claim this back using the paperwork!

Avoiding import duty is illegal and you risk loosing the item itself. People have tried and got away with numerous techniques such as:

1 - undervaluation (customs can open your parcel and value it themselves then confiscate it or charge you extra!)

2- marking the item as an engineering sample (again if it has a value and customs think the value is over the limit they may charge you or confiscate it)

3 - removing the item from its box bubble wrapping it and sending it (again risky as postal insurance will not normally cover items not in their original box).

4 - having it sent to a friend in the states and then they re package the item as a second hand item wrapped in birthday paper!

All in all its a big gamble if you try.

I once had customs asking me questions about an old circuit board from an 8 bit computer sent over with "obsolete computer equipment of no monetary value" - thing is the label was correct !!!

The favourite seems to be just order it if the cost to you is cheaper with 17.5% VAT, 5% import duty and £18 handling charge - This is what TNT/post office/parcel force charge.

Personally I look for the "we repay your import duty" auctions on ebay - I bought £2800 worth of kit from Hong Kong (DIGITALREV: D200,D40x kit,2 flashes and 3 extra lenses) and had to pay import duty but this was claimed back within a few days.

Less if you pay the £8 fedex express fee, 2 days i believe, pretty damn good from HK to UK.

One Stop Digital do the same

and if you look at the feedback they are both really good. eg £345 inc delivery for a D60 kit inc lens plus extra battery, cleaning kit, bag and 4Gb memory card ! I was just looking for a camera for a friend - sounds like a good deal to me!

i got my kit in 4 days i think it was over a bank holiday weekend, was there half 8 the tuesday morning, fantastic service and i will deal with them again

Used onestop a couple of times without any problem whatsoever, i think they are closed now though for a couple of weeks, check this from there website.

Hmm, I'm off to Orlando for three weeks in Sept/Oct, wonder if I could pick up a lens.....

If it was in your kit bag with your other stuff you are likely to just walk straight through but you are supposed to go through the something to declare isle and pay any duty.

I'm thinking of doing the same when I go to New York in November.

Also thinking of posting the Packaging to my parents from over there so I don't have the packaging if I should get stopped.

BEst thing to do is give a friend, m8, or relative who is going to the USA a shooping list and some funds. Then they can buy said items and bring them back in their suit case.
A friend of mind went to Chicago and got me a Canon lens. He is budding photograhper like ost people on here. So he had his ruck sack with his camera gear in and just put the lens in with the rest of his kit.

I hav also ordered from the USA and been hit with Import duty, VAT and £18.00 handling charge. This brought the total purchase price almost up to the UK price ! ! ! !

I now order from Hong Kong as it is cheaper and easier. The shop i use I think it is called HK cameras.
I have had no trouble at all with them. I normally order filters etc which customs seem to leave alone !

A friend of mine bought a camera in Gran Canaria, carried the camera back and posted some lightweight insignificant tat, using the box for the camera as packaging.
