Wow! Nikon D700 the biggest...

...instruction manual i've ever seen :eek:

In case you didnt know i've switched over to the Dark side from a Canon 1DmkIII and now have the D700 along with the 24mm 1.4G & 85mm 1.4G currently sat on my desk at work.

I have the battery on charge and so I thought i'd take time to have a look through the manual and OMG it's like an encyclopaedia :D.

So the point of my thread is are there any tips you Nikon guys have for this fine looking body. Such as Back button focus, auto ISO settings and just stuff in general.

switching from Canon to Nikon takes some gut and courage to do it lol. I guess you already notice the Nikon system is very different, i.e button layout etc.

I tend to leave most of my settings off and i have everything in control. i don't use auto ISO settings i tend to leave it manual. I think most nikon camera default at 200 - 6400 (depend what your camera limit is) anything higher is called HI ...... so on.

Ideally 200-6400 is within well use range so i don't see why i have to use anything higher etc.

The back focus button is very good to use, i sometimes switch it back when i lazy but when i shoot sports or wild life i use the back focus button.

Yeah you're not wrong there :D But already I can see i'm gonna love this camera. There's so many buttons on the body for changing settings whereas the Canon system seems heavily reliant on menus which I found quite frustrating on my 1DmkIII

thats what i love about Nikon system. I have all the buttons i need on the camera to change the settings i want. I love the buttons lol.

And you can customise what certain buttons do, my advice Phil is to not over complicate things by delving too deeply into the manual, the camera works fine straight out of the box, stick the front level on "C" for tracking and shoot. :thumbs:

When the battery is charged try an ISO 12,800 shot and prepare to be amazed.

Cheers Gary I didnt even see that switch on the front. The more I look at the body the more buttons and switches i'm finding.

The camera certainly feels great in the hands though i'm gonna miss the joystick of the 1D mkIII.

Cant wait to do a test shot at high ISO. The battery is all charged but I forgot to bring a memory card to work:bang:

May get a grip at some point but i'm quite enjoying the smaller form factor as one of the reasons I moved away from the 1DmkII was its large size.

I'm finding the body balances really well with my two lenses:)

You dont need a card, you can shoot and review the shot on the screen without a card. :thumbs:

You cant save it or anything but it is recorded while the camera is on.
 
Good luck with the D700 Phillip. Your bravery for the change will be rewarded. It's a great camera!

Cheers again Gary. I had wondered that. But I wanna see my first shots full screen on my iMac so i can pixel peep and try and find the noise :D

I've got the back button focus set up and focus seems nice and snappy with these 1.4G lenses :thumbs:

Whomever advised you to do that was a complete and utter idiot, especially with the 1Dx due out soon.

I know what you mean, everytime when my canon buddies use my camera i look at them trying so hard to unscrew the lens cap and try so hard to mount the lens but then they realise they done it the opposite way hahahaha.

I still get lenses stuck, luckily them wiggle free. only thing i dont like about Nikon is the silly, stupid lens mount system
 
Phil, if youre gonna invest in a mid range zoom sometime i would reccomend the Tamron 28-75mm f/2.8 its stupidly good on a Nikon full frame camera and a good used one can be had for about £200.

99% of the quality of the Nikon 24-70mm f/2.8 but only 20% of the price, no brainer really, ask Bluesman Graham, he bought one on my reccomendation

If you want to see some sample images with it and the D700 drop me a PM and ill let you have a temp password to a section of my website where theres loads.

Hi Mark.

The reason i've switched is I'm no longer doing the pro sports and wanted a smaller body which combined the full frame. I toyed with the 5D mkII but knew i'd be disappointed with the AF. I'm gonna do local sports and sell to parents and the fact the D700 can AF superbly well as well the superb noise control and ability to shoot 5FPS or 8FPS if you add the grip made it a no brainer to me :)

I'll be back in the sports forum next year when I get the 70-200 for the Nikon.

ps the 1DX is awesome but there's no way I could afford that price :gag:

Yeah I thought my body cap was sealed onto my D700 earlier :lol:

Also every control seems to be the opposite way round of Canon's so i'm gonna have to get my practice in.

By the way i'd love to see samples of from the Tamron :thumbs:

Good stuff, been using the D700 for nearly 2 years now and am still impressed with the thing. I tend to use mine with the nikon grip, but it makes it a right old lump, especially with a big fast zoom on it. I use auto iso an awful lot, usually set at 6400 max, and I'm more than happy to print 15 x 10 and even A3 at 6400. Anything higher than that is usable but noisy, although noise ninja helps.

Sorted you out a temp password Phil and sent PM, if you wanna try a Tamron or a 70-200mm MKI before buying im not far away.
 
Phil, you'll love it. I set my fn button for spot focusing so I can check skin exposure or use quickly in difficult light. I also set the dof preview button as flash off so I can check ambient exposure quickly when bouncing flash.

Loads of good stuff in the d700 thread though.

You can swap the direction the dials work. ;)
 
David Busch's book is superb. Goes way beyond the manual in that it explains the why's and wherefores of all the settings with very clear illustrations.

I have the Fn button assigned to spot metering.
Focus solely controlled by the AF button on the back.
Shutter, aperture and ISO are always in Manual mode.
It all soon becomes second nature and all the controls can be operated without taking the camera from my eye.
 
i guess phil need to update his profile lol. It still says Canon 1D Mark III hahahaha

I cant believe the picture quality at ISO 6400, it knocks socks of the files I was getting at ISO 3200 from my old 1DmkIII and thats comparing a OOC JPEG from the D700 to the RAW processed file of the Canon.

Its quite simply in a different league :), and this is a Canon fanboy who was very pleased with Canon and not someone wishing to justify the switch :D
