Would you give advice to a stranger?

I certainly have heard of fill in flash but I know the standard sync for the pop up flash is 1/250 and given the distance to subject I hardly think a built in flash would have done as much damage as peeing in the ocean

As the flash popped up itself I'm guessing full-auto was engaged too

We all have to start somewhere....
I have lost count of the number of times I have grabbed the camera, raised it up to my eye only to realise the lens cap is still on.

And if your shooting a rangefinder you wouldn't even notice lol

I know this forum is more geared towards people that know what they're doing. But from the other side I know that if you had come over and taken a quick look at my pics and give me a few hints and tips I'd be ridiculously chuffed. However i also know my brother-in-law in the same situation would be a complete pig...
Perhaps it more depends on your mood, what you're doing at the time and if the person seams friendly and open ... if so what can it hurt. You get to talk about something you love doing to someone who is receptive to you and will probably go away with a bit more appreciation for technicalities.

I am no where near the standard of most people on here but I enjoy what I do as a hobby. I started with a 400d and was offered a 1dmk11N with 1200 actuations for a price I couldn't refuse. I bought a second hand 70-200 f4 and upgraded a Sigma 24-70 f2.8 to a Canon 24-70 f2.8 as I was convinced the sigma was soft in relation to the Canon 70-200L I had. People tend to look at what kit is used and think what level they are at. My abillity is probably lower than my kit. I have never offered any advice but if asked would help to the best of my abillity. With regard to somebody coming and giving me advise......brilliant, ill take any info I can get to learn, everyday is a school day

biggest laugh was a guy with a tiny P&S on a monopod.

Nothing funny in that. My father suffers a tremor now, which makes photography almost impossible for him, unless he uses somehing to rest the camera on. So its mono pods, tripods, walls, gates, fences and almost any other static object for him. Its the only way now, that he can enjoy his hobby.

We often learn by our mistakes, guess he'll of realised when he got home and looked at his pics. Saw one guy there shooting with a 100-400 L using his pop up flash, biggest laugh was a guy with a tiny P&S on a monopod.

.......maybe he had an illness and needed the extra stability?

No need to feel bad, I always ask for help and generally people are always happy to give it, I also go over and help if I see that I can and again it is generally appreciated.
