Would you ever keep a spare tripod head?

Hi Guys,

I recently bought a lovely new Giottos tripod and I'm very impressed with it. The only thing I wasn't that keen on was the 3 handle head that was with it as I just felt it was slowing me down too much so I bought a nice heavy duty Manfrotto joystick type ball head and now I'm wondering whether to sell the other head or just keep it in case something goes wrong with the ball head. Do you guys keep spares like this?

Regards

Scott

I have a couple but only as clutter!

For me it would depend how much the other head is worth second hand?

If it's not worth much then it might be worth keeping. I've gotten sand in a ball head before making it unusable that day. I now keep a cheap spare in the van just in case.

Depends what its worth but if its not worth a lot then keep it, you never know when you might need a spare
I have two a ball head and a geared head but I use them for different things

I have two tripod heads that I use regularly - a big geared jobbie for studio, and a light ball-head for out and about. I used to use a DIY quick-release system just for the head, but now have two centre-columns and swap them over that way. Actually, I couldn't find a centre-column for my tripod so I just cut it in half as both ends are identical, but not all tripods are like this.

Cheers guys. I've found that after I've sold things in the past I've usually needed them for something like bags when changing systems etc so just thought this might be worth keeping. Not sure if it's worth much to be honest as I've not looked. I think i'll keep it just in case but as Nod say's I don't want to just clutter the place up.

I have spares of all sorts of kit! My main tripod is a Manfrotto 055CX and I also have a 190CX. As far as heads are concened I have a 410 but also a 055 and 054 which are Hejnar converted. Even when we travel abroad, I always make sure that between my husband and I there are 3 full sets of tripods and heads. Bags and pouches are another weakness.

Haha stuff carrying your bags to the room. I normally take my body and one or two lenses at most with me. Even that seems like a pain at times which was why the mirrorless system was a god send till I had to switch back.

I started off with a 322 joystick trigger type (thats now on a monopod), then went to a 410geared now on the manfrotto 055 (thats my stable setup), now using a small generic ball for hiking with (my mountain kit) and also considering a fluid head for vid, each has their own strengths and weaknesses.

If you are asking are two heads too many, then I'd say two might be too few :D

I must admit we travel very heavy - I think on one trip to the US my husband worked out we had 120kg of luggage with us! It does become a bit of a chore when it comes to packing / unpacking the car at each hotel. Since I nearly lost my filter holder at the start of a 3 week trip a number of years ago, I seem to have been acquiring various bits of spare kit. If I made the decision to leave something at home, it would no doubt be the one item I needed.

It's only really useful as a backup if you're going to carry it everywhere you take your tripod. Get rid, I reckon.

God I used to dread three 20kg suitcases and a buggy !! You're dedicated i'll give you that.

That's a good point. Never thought of that. More than likely it would be at home so I think you're right Simon.
