Would these be acceptable? ** New pics added **

I look forward to seeing the results - however the OP gets there. :)

Hi,

Thanks to all who answered the original post and all the advice.

Here are a few from the weekend's Tournament, I have not done much to these in Photoshop (except 1 of them) just a little noise reduction and altered levels in Lightroom. I'll be doing more pp when I get time this week.

Please comment on them, advise where ever possible, cheers :)

Hi Paul
Yep, those are a very big improvement on your original shots - focus is on subject and look much sharper and brighter - well done !

For me nos 2 ( very clear action with good expression on face) and 4 (nice stance, just let down a tad with her hand blocking a little of her face and a tad overexposed) are best.

Some things to work on for next go:
No1, just a pity about the glove hiding the face.
No 3 is a little soft and the B/G' not helping. Difficult to get uncluttered B/G, but you've just got to try.

yep - these are much better - well done. A little variation in the WB between shots that maybe needs fixed but more minor problems than with the first set. Did you shoot in bursts?

Now I really need to learn photoshop a bit more, how long did that take? I'm guessing duplicate layer, mask out foreground then blur like crazy?

+1 - that is first class work - didn't know PS could do that much.

And that second batch is an incredible improvement - well done!

Number 1 is a good action shot. What I tend to do with things like that is take 4-5 of the kick in this instance. That way the glove would have probably moved.

Number 3 is a good action shot also, but looks a little out of focus on the subjects.

Number 4, again nice shot, but needs a little photoshop work. Brightness/exposure perhaps.

Cheers, I've got quite a few shots to process, loads of the girl in shot 4 (she's the English champion I believe)

Thanks Andrew, no didn't shoot in burst. Not too keen on it as the viewfinder goes blank!

Thanks David.

Cheers Eric, I shot in single shot mode so shot 1 is just one of those things... maybe I need to get comfortable with burst mode.

 Blank!? I would be shooting this at 8 frames per second!

My D5000 only does 3.5fps, when I used burst while shooting motorsport all I saw through the viewfinder was black (maybe the odd bit of normal view, can't really remember as it was a while ago, but mainly black) while I had the shutter pressed. I assumed it was because the mirror was up, is that not normal?

Not normal on my bodies - no - the mirror goes up and down with each shutter sequence - blindingly fast! One reason pro bodies cost a lot more I suppose.

get higher speed if possible and more contrast...exposure

the backgrounds can be fussy...for photographic purposes just try to get the combatants only in a shot with large aperture to throw the background out of focus
