A while back I bought one of the new retina imac's. For the last couple of years I have been using windows after using macs for donkeys years.

I really don't like the way Mac OSX has evolved and so I have decided to jump back to windows again and the imac will be finding a new lease of life in the wife's office. I know I can run windows on it but we need another p.c anyway.

Just unsure what to buy spec wise, I don't have a massive budget around £1,000, will only be used for editing. I did see this which seemed to tick all the boxes but not sure of I can get better for my money elsewhere?

I think you won't need that sort of budget. An i5 rather than an i7 will do what you want. Have a look at the PCSpecialist site for i5 based systems to see what you can get.

Does the £1000 include screen? A 5k screen is still over the £1k mark but you can get 1440p for about £400 which is still fine for editing.

Hi, no the 1k does not include a screen I have a couple of half decent monitors.

Will do Dave isn't the i5 not a lot slower than the i7 though. Apologies I am not clued up on this stuff any more.

If you can afford it then that should be excellent. Sure an i5 will get close to a stock i7, but this system has been tweaked and optimised to offer above standard performance. You might save £200 and get a system that will perform adequately, but not as well as this.

I ended up going an entirely different route and bought an xps 8700 from the dell outlet store which I am very happy with it so far.

  • XPS 8700
  • Processor: Intel® Core™ i7-4790 processor (8MB Cache, up to 4.0GHz)
  • Windows® 8.1
  • 3 TB SATA III Hard Drive (7200RPM)
  • Hard Drive: 256 GB Solid State Mini Card
  • 32 GB Memory (4x8GB) 1600MHz DDR3 Quad Channel
  • 2 GB AMD Radeon HD R9 270 GDDR5
  • Windows® 8.1 (64 Bit) English
  • 12X Blu-ray Disc Combo (DVD+/-RW + BD-ROM)
  • Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 + Bluetooth 4.0
It was a new and unopened customer return so brand new and cost £910 plus £22 delivery but I found a voucher code online for 10% off and they had a promo on for free delivery.

There was then a slight hold up with the delivery so they refunded me an extra £75.00 which brought the price down to £743 delivered.

Ive used the Dell outlet store before and bought some tremendous bargains. From what I recall there usedto be a certain time they used to load stock on to the site ( I think it might have been Tuesday lunchtime) but if you were around at the right time there were some tremendous bargains before it was all picked clean.

A warning has been issued for this post
I built the following for 1250, and it can be used with OSX (a la hackintosh) or Windows, It is very capable for both photo and video (as fast as the £2400 Mac Pro when benchmarked in photoshop and final cut pro)
