Ok, I've been keen on doing a 365 for some time, but they seem to have been done to death. And I don't consider myself good enough to have a portfolio. But I would like to have a little website, something other than Flickr, where I can showcase some work, get people seeing my images, etc.

Well, I think I've come up with the idea...

Still very much in it's infancy, but there's a little hill a few miles from our house, right on the edge of the North Yorks Moors, called Roseberry Topping. My idea is to photograph it, take photos from the top, the immediate surrounding area, etc. Not one a day, but maybe weekly as the season's change.

Here's a couple of pics from my first outing... (there are more, but I cant post them for comment as some, and some similar, are in this month's comp)

And the 'site' (I'm using blogger) where I am hosting this can be found at this link...

Would really appreciate any thoughts or comments on this. It's worthiness, the idea, pretty much anything.

Feel free to be critical!

The only thing I would say that it is VERY much in early days. I'll be adding an intro about the place and a lot more background detail, including a bit about me etc.

It isn't yours!

I used to walk up that every week when I was at 6th form and fairly regularly when I was at uni (get home, dogs into back of car, park on the edge of Guisborough and walk).

I'll be interested to see how this goes. I never used to use the path up from Newton under roseberry, either Gribdale Gate and loop round Capt Cook's or walk from Guisborough.

I would think that the surroundings will give you a good range of options.

I'm not at all familiar with the North Yorkshire moors so I'd be interested in seeing what you come up with. Good luck and have fun:thumbs:

Shame we can't see your starting scenery:lol:

I think it sounds like a fantastic idea, I'll be really interested to see how you get on over the coming months

Well the idea is 'One man's hill... another man's mountain'. But putting '...' uncentres the type and makes it look ugly, so it'll have to wait til I've done a graphic. :)

I thought there'd be a lot more 'opinions' on what was wrong with this? Maybe it's because there's not much there yet, or because it's not a 'business' webiste?

Anyways, thanks to those who have looked.

I never used to use the path up from Newton under roseberry, either Gribdale Gate and loop round Capt Cook's or walk from Guisborough.

I used to walk from my house regularly (up eston nab, down to cross keys, down the old railway track to guisborough woods, and then through and along to 'the hill'), but am well out of practice now. I was quite knackered Sunday!

I think the idea of a 365 is that the daily commitment of having to take a picture eventually produces a result (either photographically or in the mind of the photographer) that the photographer feels has been worth his or her efforts.
Other peoples views are secondary (unlike the images which should be critted to death ) as any subject is worthy if over the time the tog can explore it's potential.
Just my tuppence worth....

Its a nice idea, but won't you keep bumping in to Joe Cornish?;)

...and Alan Hinkes. I know he's not a tog but its his favourite place to climb and he's the only British mountaineer to have climbed all 13 peaks over 8000 mteres, so it must be good.

I like this idea and I'll be keeping a watchful eye on it.

Sorry, I didn't understand a word of what you meant there. It's not meant to be a 365, and the bit about worthiness, I was meaning the idea of the site, rather than the images. The brief to myself was to come up with a photo based project that would allow me to update easily on a regular or irregular basis, but just as importantly, stand up in it's own right as a website and not just appeal to fellow photo hobbyists. Something that would potentially allow me to build a site that could get a top 3 Google natural placing for at least one given search term - and I don't mean something obscure like "Lee Shephard Photo Blog". I think I've come up with something that stands a good chance with any of these three terms - "Roseberry Topping", "Cleveland Way", and "North Yorkshire Moors". That's all IMO of course. :)

I wouldn't recognise him if I did.

...and Alan Hinkes.

Who? It's usually covered in people with red socks. And I keep tripping over all the bloody walking sticks that seem to be all the rage now!

Actually, I think your concept is a very good one. And I wish I'd thought of the title myself ...

Which brings me to another thought I had this morning while doing the shopping ... there's nothing as valuable in the creative world as a good idea. In some ways it defeats the object of it to broadcast it over the internet, even to your fellows. In fact one of them is the most likely of all to pinch it and use it themselves. See what I mean about the title?

One needs to have faith in one's own ideas and go ahead and put them into practice, without necessarily having the support of others.:)

I think it's a good idea.

There was (maybe still is) a local exhibition based around roseberry topping where all the photos feature it but are not a photo of it.

I have been toying with the idea of taking a picture on the first Sat of every month to show how an area changes through the year.

I just need a venue though as most of the ones I have come up with can become impassible if we get any snow.
