The World Press Photo contest for 2007 has announced its winning entries, which include Tim Hetherington's World Press Photo of the Year. The contest website also includes a gallery and list of all winners.

shame that most of the images are related to war and violence... but i guess that sells more newspapers than cute little puppies.

I wouldn't say that it is a shame. War has been part of life since man kind began. Frankly I think some of the war photographers deserve to get the credit that they do because without them the hidden horrors of many conflicts would go unnoticed by the general public who prefer to brush these things under the carpet.
 
John Moore's winning image in the immediate aftermath of Benazir's assassination is one of the most brutal images I've ever seen. Looking at that evokes so many emotions that I don't really know where to begin and I think that is what makes it a winner. Not because it sells newspapers.
 
What makes a lot of those photos so simply stunning is the emotion that it extracts from you.
I think KayJay is right about Benazir's assassination photo.
It is one of the most heart-breaking, gut wrenching photos I've ever seen.
