It’s the ref. He should have just carded them. At least FIFA could give them a 5 pt penalty for their next qualifier.

Not sure how we are lucky? Dominated the game so far. Had the best chances and should be playing against 10 men.
 
We're pretty solid at the back, but too one dimensional up front. Set pieces not so successful against a well organised defence

We got away with that. Fair play to the pen takers. And great save!
 
Deserved to win that by a mile. Dirty cheating side, like Tunisia. Had a setback but came thorough it. Won a penalty shootout, how valuable will that be?

Dominated the game. Good performance at this stage. Great spirit.

Anyway. Every time Southgate speaks I love him even more. Regardless of Sweden game, he has been the best since robson.

Yes, I agree about Southgate, a gentleman in a ruffians game.

I’m a Leicester lad & supporter and I was dreading Jamie missing the crucial pen and having to live with that

What a game Harry Maguire had, hope Leicester can hang on to him.

Many people questioned it when he got the job, but he has proved them all wrong. Cool, calm, level headed.... Love his approach, best we have had in a very, very long time....

I did, I questioned him! But everything he does is perfect, knows about tactics, pressure, our best WC since 90
 
I like Southgate. But we were rubbish for the last 20 mins. I thought we would lose, and the first half of ET was shocking. But we won at the end of the day. I think we need to start with Rashford and Loftus Cheek against Sweden. Sterling was awful and Alli isn’t anywhere near 100% we should take confidence from tonight.
 
Brilliant result and so pleased we came through that penalty shoot out. Our game management was a bit poor tonight, we stopped playing the ball out at times and resorted to launching it which just gave possession back to Columbia and creates more pressure for us.

However, great to see us slug it out with a team that tried to bully us (& the ref). Roll on Sweden, should be a totally different game albeit Sweden are pretty mobile.
 
There should not have been 11 Colombian players on the pitch at the end of normal time.

I agree. Aside from the goal they had few chances, and we dominated possession, a professional if not always exciting, performance with end product. Drop Sterling for Rashford.

Glad we won what turned out to be a horrible game, hope the next one is more enjoyable
Not holding out too much hope though, never have been against Sweden, usually like a dour premier league game.

Note to the referee, you are there to make decisions not mediate and chair a discussion group

Just seen the stats above, just two shots on target and presumably one of those is the penalty

Your right, last twenty minutes of normal time they looked dangerous and for the first half of extra time, but they lost steam after that and during the second period of extra time we were on top and Dier should have scored. Not a great game but we're through and thats what counts.
 
Top teams don’t wilt’ like we did after they scored ? Was that fatigue (same for both teams) more probably a ‘mental’ thing which they simply have to cure. You cannot expect to dominate an entire match against teams at top level but goodness for a period there in extra time we couldn’t string two passes together.

I thought at the time Wiltshire should have been picked ? No ‘guile’ in midfield or the ability to ‘run past’ a defender.

Don’t think Southgate has got much wrong but Wiltshire a big miss.

I do think we were crying out for Wilshire last night, and that was a mistake. That said a great result. We didn't (generally) lose our heads, great experience for the team to play that sort of match. We won, and we won a shoot out!! May not have had lots of attempts on goal but we dominated and controlled the game overall. Sweden will be tough, but is winnable.
