Hi All,

Today is World Blood Donor Day. So why not do something amazing and go to www.blood.co.uk and book yourself an appointment.

I can see the fors and against organ donation but there really is no excuse for not giving an arm full.

Go on you'll only feel a small prick if you do.

OK! I've not been for a while

booked in for the 26th June!

I wouldn't mind doing this but unfortunately I can't because of medical reasons.
It's a good thing to do though and my Aunty gives blood sometimes.

If there's a nice female nurse, you could ask for a kiss in return :D

I might get shot down in flames, but most countries pay you to take time off and give your blood.. How come ours doesnt?
Maybe I'll give the NHS some blood in return for a free prescription or 2.

Nobody has shot you down in flames yet, we must be a tolerant lot on here:D

They don't want mine any more, but I was a donor for 25 years. I never once had to take time off work, the sessions run all day and into the evening usually so you can fit it in without missing work.

When the sessions are run at the sites of large employers the employers give you the time off to donate.

Why should anybody need to be paid for time off?

Our voluntary system has a far higher safety record than many countries with a pay per donation system. I'd much rather receive blood through that than from somebody who was paid to donate.

I'll badger my OH for when we come back from holiday.

I considered donating a few years ago because it seemed the honourable thing to do, so I went along with OH while he gave blood to see what went on. Passed out. They gave me one word of advice - DON'T! I'm too much hassle for them!

I'm rubbish with needles anyway, but that's normally when they get stuck in me, not in anyone else!

(Mental note to remind OH again)

Having spent a considerable amount of time on a ward seeing other patients receiving donated blood, I was amazed at how much they used in a day, and these were all "non-emergency" situations.

If you are able to, I would definitely urge anybody to consider donating blood.

I'm officially excused from donating now I'm an immigrant :D

Great resposes. I'm a big believer in donating blood. It its used in loads of different cases such as child birth, road accidents and even rouing surgery.

To all who say they will... good on ya. You may need some yourself one day... but hopefully not.

When i started i thought to myself how would i feel if a doctor said "sorry we cant treat your parent/child/wife because we have run out of blood". Kinda clinched the argument for me.

I donated my pint on Friday.

For those of you that are not sure have a good think.

I hope you never need to receive blood, but if you do, you will be grateful that someone did.
The people receiving blood have no choice, they need it to live - you can choose to help them.

Once you receive blood you can no longer donate.

It really is a simple procedure, as Notts_Dave says - you only feel a little prick ! :naughty: plus free biccies and a drink

I used to donate regularly (2-3 times every 14 months or so for about 3 years) but I stopped. The nurses who took my blood had problems finding a suitable vein so they would just...guess. This happened on 3 different occasions and every time I ended up with a sore arm and massive bruises all over my elbow/forearm from where the needle was forced into my arm and removed improperly. Eventually I just gave up and haven't been back since. It's a shame because I used to love doing it, and I always felt proud afterwards. But eventually I was told to stop donating because my "veins aren't suitable" (direct quote from the nurse the last day I tried to donate)

I have been a regular donor for quite some years now, and normally go every three months if I can. I would urge anyone who doesn't or hasn't to go along and let them do their thing. I hate needles and have to look the other way until it's all over, but being O neg means my blood is pretty valuable so I just get on with it.
It doesn't hurt, and most locations run sessions in the evening.

Another regular donor here too :)

I am a bit fed up of explaining that I lived in Malawi as a child every single time though, cant they put that on my records? It just wastes time :p

I have my Bronze card now, but will take a while to get to silver :D

oh, I didn't get anything for 25 years of donations, well a lot of biscuits and cups of tea.

I timed having to give up quite well though, it was just when they stopped giving an anaesthetic.
