Does anybody know if there are any places in Liverpool that hold workshops or photography days etc??

Relatively new to my 40D and feel it would be so much easier for me to learn by watching rather than reading.

Any suggestions?

Thanks

Have you considered joining a photography club? I know of one in South Liverpool, but don't know if that's any use to you.

Yeah funny you should say that, I have just arranged to go to a meeting tomorrow. Found out that there is a group on my doorstep, Kirkby Photography Society, so going to pop in there and see if it will help me at all.

I see you got a lens for sale too, do you rate it at all? I am considering getting rid of my kit lens and going for a 17-85, you recommend it??

Glad you found a local meet. Probably the best way to get help and advice in person.

As for the lens, I've no experience with the standard zooms other than the one I've replaced the 17-85mm with so I can't offer a comparison.

I actually think the 17-85mm is a great general use lens, but the limiting factor for me is the maximum aperture.

Looking back now I should have gone for the lens as a package instead of buying the 40D body only, but thats hindsight for you hey. I opted for the grip instead to make the camera more comfortable.

i have the 17-85
lens came with the camera
i find it fine sharp enough for me
the IS is a help in low light
i have the tamron 28-75 xr di
and there is very little in it exept the tamron is 2.8
wasnt sure which one to sell
but i think i will keep the canon cant really see a need for both

How was the meet, Paul?

Hi Mate,

It was ok but the night was aimed at AV presenting and to be honest that isnt really my thing. Very much like elaborate slide shows with music and I am sure it appeals to some but not really my cup of tea. My Mac produces good slides automatically so if I wanted to show my pics I would do it that way in a fraction of the time and effort for now.

There are a few nights coming up over the next few weeks which look good, one involves a guy setting up a studio and helping people to get the right shot etc so that should be good. Some print competitions too but thats not for me just yet, need to be able to take the shot before I enter print comps!!

I suppose as long as I am meeting like minded people who have a good understanding of their equipment then it is a start for me and it can only help.

After looking at your Flickr account it should be you I am pestering for help....you got some great shots on there, will have to hijack you for a day seeing as your in the area!! haha

there is a studio called vip images on the wirral its just over the water, when I was last talking to the guy in the studios he was looking to get all of his studios in use by doing workshops and stuff..here is the link

Ha-ha! Thanks, Paul.

I'd imagine you will get just as much from chatting to people and going out on organised shoots as you will from their workshops.

I'm fairly new to this forum, but I know they organise local meet-ups in other photography forums with plenty of activity in the north-west. For example, there's a group organising a meet-up at the waterfront for when the tall ships come into town.

Another good forum that has quite a few northwest meets is ephotozine, I have been to a few of thier meets and have enjoyed meeting other local togs.
