Working a theme

Perhaps I am trying to be too literal but I'm really stumped for ideas of suitable images I can make to suit some of the POTY 2013 themes. I realise that it's a competition so I'm not looking for people to tell me what to do specifically, just some ideas as to how to approach this sort of thing in general. (I'm doing a 52-52 this year as well btw so I suppose this also applies to that)

What I find myself trying to do is extrapolate the theme word into some kind of a story and then try to tell that story with an image.

So, I've looked at quotes including the theme "words" and dictionaries and thesauri, and I've googled the words too. But I'm still stuck for some of the months themes. I just can't move forward from the word itself, let alone tell a bloomin' story:shrug:

But to be honest I think I may be "overthinking" things a bit, :bonk: hence this post, what's your approach? how do YOU decide what image to shoot & submit?

Hi Brian, my personal approach is always to see if there's another definition of the word before thinking of interpretation. Week one of this years 52 being a prime example where you see many have taken SIN as meaning something bad, but a few have taken it as it's other definition used in mathematics.

Once I have sussed the definitions of the word I'll then just let my mind wander until I come up with an idea, sometimes this takes very little time others it takes days, in fact Im going to go shoot my SIN shot this afternoon. Its taken me til today to come down to 2 of my shot ideas and I only have the props for one :-/
