Workflow : Copying images from card to PC...what do you use?

As title really.

I'm a windows explorer / cut and paste man, who then uses ckRename to rename my files according to my workflow structure.

However, if I've got more than one days shots on the card, it can be a bit tedious going through them and renaming each days shots at a time.

This is after copying them over from the card reader to a dump folder on my photography drive.

So, what do you all use?
 
Cut'n'paste here to, create a folder by date followed if necessary by a significant identifier such as the event or occasion, and paste them into the folder.

Then card back into the camera and formatted.

Simple, tedious, but works :shrug:

i use DIM does all the copying and renaming stuff no problem, even if you have several days shooting on the one card, will even download from my PD70X as well, only downside it needs java, but there ya go ! :)
 
I tend to leave pictures at their original filename; i.e. DSCFnnnn.RAW.

If i've managed to get more than one day's worth of shots on the same card, I just create separate folders and copy stuff around manually.

Oh, and I got a multi card reader from 7dayshop.com for £4, which is infinitely better than the £23 xD card reader I bought ages ago.
 
I use ACDSee Pro which copies and renames them to something sensible, it also browses, edits, batch processes, does RAW conversions and a whole host of other things too.
 
Downloader Pro which copies and renames them to anything I want, anywhere I want, then starts any program I want to convert them.
 
I use the canon eos software as it organises the shots in folders with the dates that they were taken. From there i can move them to my categorical folders with ease as i tend to only do one thing on a certain day.
 
Thanks guys. I've just downloaded a trial of Downloader Pro. Looks just right, and it looks like it will rename the files according to my workflow (giving them the proper names that I end up with, which not alot of software can do).

I think I've set it up to dump them automatically into dated folders too. But the auto-insert thing wont work for some reason (Me and my slipstreamed version of windows probably...turned Auto Insert off for everything at install time).

Anyway, going to give this a whirl, see if we see eye to eye. Thanks :)
 
Marcel I have DLP set to download to the 'images' directory on my D drive, creating a new subdirectory for each date. Under file preferences --- D:\Images\%Y%m%D is the download directory and %d%t is the file name which translates to 061231212846.CRW for example (yr,mnth,date,time to the second).
 
Yeah I've got something similar too.

I have it set to my E:\CARD READER\ folder, and in there the images go as %d_%r, and I've activated the "Directory maker" plugin, and have the folder name there as %m.%D which hopefully should give me a four figure date with a full stop. Not tried it yet though, want to figure out why the autoplay isnt working.
 
My autoplay is only half working, Marcel. I put a card into the reader in the PC and it opens a box saying download using adobe bridge or take no action.

Ive tried going into the properties of that card reader and it doesnt give any other options when inserting a card with pictures on. Loads of options when inserting a card with music on though. :|

Looks like adobe bridge has taken it over. Perhaps I should reinstall the canon window and it will take over again.
 
I recently went all out much to the discuss of my better half. I found that manually sorting, copying, pasting and naming files far too tedious. That was all Windows based. So, I bought myself a new Macbook 2.0Ghz and Apple Aperture. Store all the files in the Aperture library and use this for my workflow. You can automatically mass apply metadata somehow, cant figure that one out yet. As for naming I just tell it to use the prefic of 'HP' followed by a sequence of numbers. Nice and easy and gives me more time to edit and press the delete button.

I too use Aperture and it takes care of the whole task for me.. which is nice.

As soon as I stick the card in or plug in my pd70x, Aperture pops up and asks me where I want the pictures putting, it will then copy them all across making any changes I need and format the CF card once finished.
 
I will usually use my ScanDisk Multi-Card Reader to download from, although occasionally I link straight to the camera ... :shrug:

This then automatically opens Elements 4 which I use for dumping straight to my external LaCie Hard Drive's P (for Photos ... :lol:) Directory into a dated sub-directory !

As soon as this is done I then use the Organiser in Elements to sort the pics into their relevant date and subject sub-galleries I have set up in the Organiser ... ;)

Generally the pics are not re-named or titled except for the Birds where I generally try and add a caption appropriate to the subject including it's Latin name - just to save me looking it up later when I need it ... :thinking:

I have just ordered the upgrade for Elements to Version 5 as, although I do have CS2, I rarely use it because most of the functionality of Elements suits my simplistic approach ... and the new Version 5 increases this functionality further ... :D ... maybe one day I will explore CS2 in more detail ... although I doubt I could justify the upgrade to CS3 when it is released ... :eek:

prefer picassa on winblows but it blows chunks on linux :(
 
I copy from the cards to a flashtrax throughout the day and cut and paste from that to the PC.
 
Well I've been giving Downloader Pro a go.

Although I cant seem to get it to create subfolders for me automagically (split up into one folder per day), it copies over my files and deletes from the card, renaming them to my correct naming convention along the way.

Used to use DIM until Capture NX shafted it completely.

Now just copy and paste. Lemon squeezy and no extra software to clog my already mired PC!
 
just remember not to format your cards before you have confirmed the pics have copied properly!

Yup, I did that last night, after a little mishap.
I have Downloader Pro set, that when its fired up (it wont auto load for some reason), it detects the images on my card, downloads them to new folders, renames them accordingly, then deletes the images off the card...all in one fell swoop after an initial confirmation from me....which is just how I want it.

However, I was downloading about 20 shots last night that I had just taken for my photoblog, and I was thinking the last one was 'the one'.
As it got to the end of the list, it came up "Connection to Camera lost" (sic)...(It's a card reader). Anyway, I checked the list...nothing left to do....

I looked at the card through Windows Explorer...nothing on there either (came up empty...even no directories, but then DPro seems to delete the folders too, so I expected it).
Ah well, I load up Capture One to browse the RAW files, and they were all there except for the last one...Double check of the card, nope, it's gone.
So I assumed that DPro hadn't copied the last one over properly, but deleted it......

So I put the card back in the camera, carried on taking some shots.
Put it back into the reader for the next batch, and nothing came up...strange I thought...

The reader had fallen over. Quick in and out of the USB cable rectified it, and there were all my images, including from the previous shoot too....

So those on IRC and MSN last night may have heard a few choice words from me having a pop at Downloader Pro for killing my images, when infact my card reader had decided to have a sleep instead :p
 
I am using Picasa at the moment but occasionally I just copy and paste them....Picasa is great for a quick nef edit too ;)
 
Same as most; USB cable from camera, cut'N'past to new folder, name folder something relevant to its contents...then cut and copied onto two external HDs where I use the folders view options to file by 'name' and to show 'when created ' as a group to sort them out a little...something like that.

Its was a reasonable method, but it’s just shown its flaws since the new year flipped over because it used to group my folders into... 'Today’s’ yesterdays' last week' last month'...etc. ...I now have just one group 'last year' :shrug: ...daft sods those programmers. :lol:
 
I usually just pop the card into my ScanDisk Multi-Card Reader open up windows explorer and search on the card for all jpg and cr2 files (which gets rid of the annoying 100 photos per folder canon limit). Cut them then browse to my photos drive, create a new folder and paste them in there.

If I want to further sort down into days I would then work them with off the HDD. I never bother with renaming as I often find it just as easy to refer to the photo number for each shoot. I occasionally rename for event work where I give CD's with the numbered photos on to clients as they often find it handier to recite a "Regatta Photo 049" rather than "_MG_4536".
