Background: I graduated last year and as per a lot of graduates have had massive issues getting a permanent job, compounded by the fact it will be in the O&G sector, which has taken a big hit at the moment.

So after a fair few months of doing sme part time stuff and sitting around on my larry getting more and more frustrated (in between applying for loads of jobs) I've decided to see if I can get some more work experience (did an internship whilst at uni) so I can both get off my backside and get something useful on my CV.

I'm thinking of emailing a few companies to see if they will take someone in their office (or maybe a more practical area, but unlikely due to the costs/safety involved) for an unpaid internship of around 6-8 weeks. The thing is with oil and gas companies not exactly situated in every high street I won't be able to afford to actually pay rent etc whilst working for them so was wondering if there is likely to be any chance being able to get expenses or put up in a flat/apartment (which is what would have been offered if I had done my previous internship in the UK)?

Reason I'm making a thread is to see if anyone else has done this and what are the best ways of going about it essentially.:)

I have done 14+ months free work experience with a company. I wrote a letter to that company saying how this will help me with my training and they would get 30 hours free work from me etc. After a while though the money issue and the free work can get you down.

How could you afford to be able to do that?

TBH as well I'm not sure I could justify that to myself as the company are making a profit essentially from you but you aren't necessarily getting much back. However I guess that can be different if you are getting really useful training. I'd also have the issue that to do the job I really want to do I would need medicals and various safety/survival courses that would cost the company a lot...

I have been getting money from being a college when im not working there. Also as im studying for my nvq in retail I can count working there as part as my course.

Ah ok, that makes a bit of sense, so it's essentially part of your college course.

Unfortunately I won't be able to get money, you can't even get JSA whilst on non paid work experience, not that i'm on it now...
