Hi,

I've been using Wordpress for my blog without problems since 2012. The other day I opened it up to find that I had been shifted on to the new Block editor; I thought I would get the hang of it after a while but can't update or save any changes. I've already lost one complete post and its just not worth re-writing it or starting another.

I just get an error message saying "Updating failed. Sorry, you are not allowed to edit this post".

I've emailed them for a solution but needless to say had no reply.

Any suggestions?

One point of general advice is to write all you articles on your PC, save and then copy that over.

Other general point is to make sure all plugins are up to date, there are no abandoned ones, PHP at the latest version and any caches cleared.

It looks like it could be, but ......I've downloaded it but just get an error message when I try to unzip (?) it. I'm going to have to go for a walk to clear my head before I really get stuck into this.

That is good advice but it has previously worked completely reliably for eight years!

I have absolutely no doubt about that. Generally things go wrong with old WP installations when either there is some plugin conflict, database grows too large (have Wordfence? It's OK but it also causes massive issues from time to time) or it goes out of memory limits.
I even had situations where you could no longer load site or login after very minor updates but fixes were just as simple.
Definitely install "Server IP & Memory Usage Display" to check the memory usage is low as usual. When it goes about 100MB it is time to investigate before it hits 512 or 1024 and you have a much problem.
Check all plugins in the list to make sure there are none not-updated since like 2016 or so.

Save to a folder.
Use 7zip.
Choose 'Extract Here'

Scrub that ... just login to your Wordpress Dashboard, 'Classic Editor' is available there as a plugin and you can let Wordpress install it and then you choose to activate it ... easy! (y)

I have no plug ins and the fact that I've just been updated to the new Block editor cannot be a co-incidence.

Ah must be something about your hosting plan then, it's not a paid upgrade for me, that's over 1/2 of my annual hosting charge!

I have the option to switch back to the Classic editor, both when adding a page through WordPress on my browser on my desktop computer or when using the WordPress app on my tablet. This option is there as a matter of course, not through a plug-in.

I also have a free WP site, and have been shifted onto the block editor. I'm probably slightly better off as I write my posts with Word and then copy/paste them, but I really don't like the new editor!

Also clear your web browser cache.
That seems to have sorted it! Thanks for the suggestion...

I'm a bit confused about those last two quotes... did that refer to the Classic Editor plugin that was linked to in post #2? Being on a free plan I'm not allowed to install plugins, but somehow the sequence of posts here suggests the OP has managed it...

Well I managed somehow to completely write a post in the new editor, complete with images; it'll probably take a while to get used to it?

However I then couldn't save it. I'm not really sure what happened because I have a copy of the first three para's that I did save, but any further editing was lost when I closed it down. I just kept getting that damn error message.

However thanks to LLP's suggestion, and then delving further into WP's support pages, I cleared all cookies from my WP site and now I seem to be able to save changes. (all bodily appendages crossed) .

I haven't been able to find a link to the Classic editor.

Do you have a paid-for plan?
