Yes
We are planning a trip to the frozen north which involves a night or two staying over in either Worcester or Tewkesbury but I know nothing about either place.
'We' being 2 oldies and 2 teenagers.
A good meal or two, a cheap but nice place to stay, and a little bit of sightseeing would be ideal - all pretty low key stuff.
Any suggestions ?

I lived in Tewkesbury for twelve years and would recommend it over Worcester (which is less than half an hour's drive away) in terms of accessibility and appeal overall. There's everything you need in the town which contains a wonderful abbey and a very historical town centre. There's a travelodge situated on J9 of the M5 and a number of hotels in the town itself.

How about Stratford or Warwick instead, imo much lovlier locations and only half hour or so away from Worcs...

Cotswold not that far across from tewks ! Loads in between

Thanks for the replies - very helpful !
Worcester is now out, Tewkesbury is top of the list (It's my wife who is making decisions on this one..) and we will look into Warwick.
Stratford has already been visited, and the Cotswolds is on a list for the summer as we have friends who live there..

Warwick castle is lovely

I tend to give Worcester a miss. The centre is a miserable place in the evenings and as the University has expanded, the 'nightlife' is loud. I visited it a lot many years ago when my job took me to Pershore and Malvern. My youngeast son studied at Worcester Uni and my regular visits during those years revealed a far diferent town than 30 years ago.

Tewksbury is a good choice for a weekend and quite pleasant. Loads of olde world charm, architecture and interesting shops.

There is a wider area for longer trips, Malvern Hills, the Cotswolds, Forest of Dean, Severn Valley Railway etc all easily reached.

I would suggest Evesham as a better centre to do Worcestershire/Gloucestershire and Warwickshire. The better end of the Cotswolds is also easier from Ashum than having to suffer the Cheltnum traffic

I personally think that Tewkesbury is by far the more attractive town for the visitor than Evesham with much more to see packed into a smaller area. Broadway, Stanton, Snowshill (in the Cotswolds) are within easy reach and only a few more minutes to get to than from Evesham. In fact I don't think there's anywhere more 'central' in Great Britain than Tewkesbury. I always reckoned I could reach anywhere in England in three hours (traffic permitting etc) from Tewkesbury and M5 J9. The central location would explain why the MOD have their main vehicle depot at Ashchurch just outside the town (soon to close).

Tewkesbury is a nice town, as is Malvern - both much better than Worcester! There are lots of nice / photogenic things about. It is hard to beat a walk on the Malvern Hills, Eastnor Castle is well worth a visit, and a mooch along the riverbank at Upton Upon Severn followed by a pub lunch is great. There are many festivals in Upton throughout the year, so it might be worth seeing if you can time your trip with one which interests you, and there is the big re-enactment in Tewkesbury annually on the anniversary of the battle as well.

Thanks everyone for your help and suggestions - we are booked into a place in the centre of Tewkesbury for the night. We will only have a few daytime hours and the night so doubt we will do much more than mooch around the town centre, find a good place to eat and have a drink or two.
I guess my next question is what about places to eat... We all like pretty much any good food - I'm partial to Indian, Thai or anything different, but ideally not too expensive, whatever that means !

When you are in Tewkesbury, try the Jelly Roll cafe for breakfast or lunch - independent, great food. It's not far from the memorial cross roundabout on the road towards the M5. Google it! I agree about Worcster. Tewkesbury is much better. I also lived there for over 10 years.

I've had quite a few breakfasts in the Jelly Roll cafe, very good they are too. I'd also recommend the Rajshahi Indian restaurant in the High St for a reasonably priced and reliably good meal.

When we go and visit friends in Tewkesbury and want to eat out in the evening, we go to the restaurant at the Black Bear pub end of the high street on the "island" - I think it is the Boat House.

A walk around the ham to the weir is quite pleasant and there are a bunch of antique shops too. There's a cinema in the Roses theatre.
