Woolworths to hold 'biggest sale'

Woolworths will hold its "biggest ever" sale as administrators remain in talks with potential buyers of the troubled retailer.

Deloitte, the administrator of Woolworths, said it would slash up to 50% off goods.

The massive discounting drive comes the day after an unsuccessful bid by Dragons' Den entrepreneur Theo Paphitis for Woolworths.

His proposal would have seen the retention of the Woolworths name and acquisition of a large slice of the retail business.

Mr Paphitis said he could not reach a deal with Deloitte, adding that it was likely a break-up of the business would raise more cash for creditors.

Deloitte said talks were continuing with a number of parties interested in buying Woolworths as a going concern.

Neville Kahn, Deloitte's reorganisation services partner, said: "We will launch Woolworths' Biggest Ever Sale with discounts of up to 50% on all goods, except concessions.

"We anticipate increased footfall in the stores and have hired additional staff to cope with increased demand. Additional goods have been moved to all stores and further stock will be added in the coming days.

"There is continuing interest in the core Woolworths business and the sale will continue whilst potential buyers finalise their plans for the purchase of the business."

Highlights of the sale will include up to 50% off toys, 30% off Christmas trees and decorations, 50% off all greeting cards, 20% off personal gifts and reductions on all entertainment products.

heard about it yesterday, may pop in later today, see if there is anything left lol

Funny thing about Woolworths is; what do you go there for?

In my mind, only 2 things:

Chocolate
Something you can't find anywhere else

They don't really have a specific market, and with online retail becoming so specialised, and speciality stores for most things on the "interlife" they really were in trouble from the start...

Quick sidenote to this: Just rang Woolies in Hertford - they have huge queues!!

Point: Playstation 3's are NOT included in the 50% off. There is however a 10% discount on them!

Does this mean that we are seeing them closing doors soon? Pitty if it comes to that, a real pitty.

The market is a man-eat-man out there, it really didn't help that many were vegitarians!

Was in today, nothing really to get exited about, the "up to" 50% off sale was very selective

They are not going to sell much are they. A couple of weeks ago you could have bought the whole company for a quid. Now they are charging you £10 for a CD. Where is the value in that!!

Apparently they will be open until after Christmas. Theo Paphitititititius was recently reported to have an interest, being famed for turning around failing companies, but has pulled out :(

They should get done for false advertising.
Nowhere on the posters in the window does it say "up to" or "on selected items" they simply say "50% of all stock"
As a postscript, i bought an advent calendar from Woolworths the other day, but all the windows are boarded up.

Dean:)

get the kids toys for next xmas

Look again they say Up To50% OFF

all that was at 50% off was the crap theo didn't want, most was 10-20% off and not worth the 50 deep queue

what a load of crap
i went to one and most things were 10% off.
now bear in mind this is supposed to be the administrators selling stock off cheap you would think they would sell things at more than 10% off.. WHsmiths (and most other shops) have been doing 20% days.
