Looks like beech to me, but the colours are off a bit.

Probably Ash, it looks like it's from a dead youngish one has had the dieback Hymenoscyphus fraxineus

Personally I would say whilst at first glance it looks like ash I wouldn’t rule out Horse Chestnut. I do a fair bit of green wood carving and the cross section of the bark to me looks slightly more akin to HC plus there are a few reddish tannin marks showing where there is damage.

Thanks, it would be good if it were Ash but at the price I get it I doubt it! Lol I was just wondering what kind of hardwood I was getting. I've changed suppliers now and only get Silver Birch, which is much better suited to our needs.

I'll see if I can get a photo of some more bits if it helps identify.

Heat output isn't great, especially when compared to the Birch. You need quite a few logs on to get things really hot. It also needs a well established fire to get going.

It could be something more novel like Nothofagus similar to beech but you can coppice it, was planted quite a bit specifically for wood fuel some kind of poplar is another possibility, again can be densely planted to crop after as little as ten years - from cuttings just stuck in.
You can see it has made extremely rapid growth early on from the rings.

I think I'll stick to Silver Birch from now on. It's a little more expensive but it catches so easily and gives great heat even with the vents closed (set for slight but of airflow though even when closed). Ideal for a stove, perhaps not so good for an open fire.

Whatever this wood is, well it's around 8-12% moisture content but seems very average for burning.

With the Ash die back situation, Ash is abundant at the moment so it's just firewood. Much the same as Elm was 40 or so years ago.

It's the lack of decent heat which is making me doubt Ash, could the fungus be a contributing factor to that though?

I'm moving supplier and asking may burn my bridges, some people can be a bit funny about that up here.
Is this wood from a supplier your moving away from or considering?

You could always try a 'wow, this is great firewood, out of interest, what species is it?'

Moving away from, so it would be: "wow, this is sh*te firewood, out of interest, what species is it because I don't want any more?" :D
