try updating th ACR - check adobe.com to see if your camera is compatible with the software!

no idea - but that is the most likely reason - you need to update your software or at least the ACR part - check with adobe

I posted a thread showing the differing compatibilities of Adobe Camera Raw, Photoshop CS, Photoshop Elements and various cameras.

You can check the compatibilities here.

If I have done it right, the latest version of ACR you can use with Elements 6 is version 5.5.

look for the latest raw converter update on adobe site ther's also an how to install page as well. should put you right.

looks like i have version 4.2 and need 5.6 but im lost now, why is it so difficult!!!

ACR 5.6 is not compatible with Elements 6. As I said earlier, you need version 5.5 which was the last version usable with Elements 6. Luckily for you it also made the Nikon 300s compatible with ACR.

what I normally do is open the file with ViewNX (free from nikon) and then save them as a TIFF which i open up in CS4. I find the nikon software produces a better image than using ACR.

From the page I assume you downloaded ACR version 5.5 from, here, then there are instructions down the bottom of the page on how to install ACR with Elements 6.
