Wolves in Scotland

Panther would be interesting as there is no such animal!
But of course we all know that Panther is a generic term
for a Melanistic leopard / Melanistic Jaguar.
And indeed any of the Panthera family hence the name "Panther"
but more usually prefixed with "Black"

Tiger (Panthera tigris)
Lion (Panthera leo)
Jaguar (Panthera onca)
Leopard (Panthera pardus)
Are the largest of the family

the smaller ones
Snow Leopard (Uncia uncia)
Clouded Leopard (Neofelis nebulosa)
Sunda Clouded Leopard (Neofelis diardi)
The cougar, (Puma concolor)
Also known as the mountain lion, puma, panther, painter, mountain cat

On a serious note I don't know who here has heard of something called "Canned Hunting" ?
Not heard of it happening recently but many years back it did happen in this country, big cats were released in certain areas to be hunted down
by people who paid a small fortune.
It is just possible that many of the big cat sightings could have been these animals and equally possible that some may have escape and still be living.

I have heard about that it does go on in south Africa lions are raised and released into enclosed areas to be hunted by rich guys
pretty awful thing to do in my opinion
not heard of it happening here tho

i know they do this a lot in Africa etc, no idea if they did it here or not.

They used the white lions in africa as they were easier to spot :(
It was a few year back so may not now but bearing in mind that dog fighting is still quite common I don't doubt
that it is possible it still does, :(

While I don't like the idea of releasing big cats purely to be shot by rich "hunters", is it really that much different from pheasant shoots here?

Not sure I would travel purely to see wolves in the "wild" in Scotland, I would certainly enjoy seeing photos of them.

Yes you are right in principle that its no different to pheasant shoots but the idea of raising big cats just to shoot them is so wrong

I strongly feel that if an animal clearly has a personality then it should not be killed. We all know how loving domestic dogs and cats are, the wild are equally as loving, yes a Lion / Tiger etc will treat us like a tasty morsel but the ones that have been raised as seen on TV clearly show that they are loving, caring, cuddly animals - this is clearly a decider for me that they have enough neurons upstairs to have a good understanding of their surroundings, life and others - why should we have the right to take that away? I can understand fish farming etc but that's strictly fish - that excludes whales and smaller i.e. dolphins etc as they have been proven to have cognitive behaviour - even birds can be similar like the African Grey Parrot - another animal that's full aware of it's surroundings. The human condition just doesn't make any sense to me, I know we will never understand the female brain but when looking at everything we've done it's just disgusting - if we hadn't spent soo much on war we would have been one step closer to developing a warp drive engine by now :(

I'm pretty much sure that at the time I am talking about the big cats were the result of the law change preventing people keeping big cats as pets, so they were just got rid of
in the same way people do to domestic pets these days :(
Sadly there are people willing to pay many 1000s for this so someone obviously saw it as a money spinner

Completely agree, Ingrid. Not sure how much a place on a shoot costs but I know it wasn't cheap when my Grandfather was a member on one (pheasants, NOT big cats [or any sized cat for that matter.])

After a little googling, it seems despite international efforts to ban it, canned hunting is still going on.

Perhaps its a cunning plan by the Tories to reduce the chance of voters in Scotland voting for independence . Mind you no doubt some will end up battered and fried like Mars bars. :)

Nod, the shoots by me for a full day of Pheasant & Partridge shooting runs up to around £650 - £850, that includes starting at dawn, lunch, and gun hire :)

Well, I've read something like almost 140 posts so I may as well join in with a few points of view...

We've gone WAY off topic, that's not unusual for out of focus of course, that's one of it's fascinations. But I do think that releasing wolves in Scotland is absolutely totally bonkers!

I'm a carnivore and I eat animals, if it came to the push I'd be quite prepared to kill something to eat it, that's not a problem for me personally.

Killing animals just for fun (or sport if you want to make it sound better) is appaling and uncivilised.

I know some won't agree, but I doubt I'll ever change my mind on this one.

Where does beef come from?
yes but we eat those that's the point
I think that its ok to kill something to eat, I like beef but killing things for the sake of it is wrong

I get mine from Tesco's or the (No so) local butcher if I have time (y)

Answer is it comes from a dead animal. Is breeding cows to kill them any worse than breeding lions to shoot them? Birth, death, its all the same to me.

Perhaps the hunters should eat their Lion kill, that would make it ok. My mate goes pheasant hunting, he says its a scream, but he eats what he kills, but the shoot is the fun of it. He could buy pheasant meat anywhere

Ah, you wanted a serious answer, sorry ;)
(but it still comes from tesco's (et al) which ever way you look at it :D))

Its well known that some "estates" need to cull their deer,
So they charge people for the "privilege" ;)
They may as well make money from it.
I guess as "that" ends up on the dinner table, its more socially acceptable.

As for breeding big cats, for the purpose, you could argue that "canned hunting",
human nature being what it is,
does indeed save's the lives of "wild stock" in its native country.

At around £6,000 a head for the guns, I can't see that ending up in Tesco ;)

I may have upset Jasmine slightly at the pub on Saturday evening when I told her I was eating Bambi's Mum pie! I could have said she was eating Nemo but that would have been unkind.

Joining a pheasant shoot to get food for the table is NOT cost effective! At let's say £500 for a day's shooting, £7.50 or so for a brace of oven ready birds, you'll need to shoot 133 birds to break even (without covering the cost of cartridges or travel to the shoot).

Exactly. The high cost is because it is covering the salary of several staff to run the estate all year round, that means raising the birds, feeding them etc. It's a lengthy process which is why it's pricey. Unfortunately for me I've been raised this way ever since I was born ad my step grandad owns a 55000 acre estate, i've discovered that partridges are some of the most social birds you would ever see, they develop a strange personality but will known you by voice and image, they huff if you aren't about etc - it's almost like having a puppy around. This is why I don't eat them!

Oh deer oh deer. Show yourself the door :p:coat::D
Sorry I'll just stag-ger out now :coat:
And make sure I take everything with me,
leaving nothing be-hind

That's really interesting about partridges. I'm aware that some parrots develop a very strong bond with human carers/owners and some members of the corvid family are amongst the most intelligent of creatures - but partridges! Fascinating.

I remember as a teenager fawning after a doe-eyed girl.

I was stuck in a rut.

:exit:
I'm guessing you Fallowed her here, you fallowed her there?
But I won't mention "Stalking" :D

I will admit, being a teenager, I had a constant full 12 pointer.
Nice when they are covered in velvet, but
not so nice when they fall off :D
